Pre-op Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

I am currently on Day 3 of my 10 day liquid diet and it has been very difficult but I'm feeling terrible. I mainly feel weak almost like a diabetic but have been getting in 60-75G of Protein from Protein Shakes the past few days. I am really contemplating on trying to eat one scrambled egg or grilled chicken nuggets from Chick fil a to see if it helps. I know technically this is not allowed by what are your thoughts on it?? Just looking for some guidance as I am determined to finish and have surgery but want to feel better?

Don't eat solids! Try changing Protein Shake brands. I am on day 4. The first 3 days were a dream, but today I struggled a little because I miss chewing. I am having a Premier Protein shake and coffee for Breakfast (I use a little Protein shake for cream in my coffee), then I have some chicken stock at about 10am. I have more chicken stock at Noon followed by another shake. At 2pm I have one Jello cup. dinner is another cup of stock followed by a shake. Jello at 8pm, then bed. I drink iced tea during the day and Propel Water. My Dr has warned me that eating solids will prevent your liver from shrinking and he has had cases where he could not go thru with surgery. There is a light at the end of our tunnel....only a few more days!!!

I'll go against the grain and say that the egg will be fine...but not the Chick Fil A nuggets. Stay away from the nuggets.

You must keep your carb level low for your liver to shrink. The nuggets have breading and are fried in peanut oil, and will keep your liver from shrinking. Don't eat them.

The breading on the nuggets will keep your liver from depleting its glycogen stores, so it will be like taking 10 steps backward in progress.

The egg, on the other hand, doesn't have enough carbs to hinder liver shrinkage.

I switched between Optifast shakes, bars and Soups. The bars were a nice change having something to chew. In the evening I stirfried some of the vegies from the allowed list.

My directions were Optifast 3 meals a day. Plus 1 teaspoon of oil (to prevent gallbladder issues) and approved vegetables).

I felt like crap for the first week, but the second week I started to feel great. Keep walking, it helps your energy.

If I'm not mistaken you can have yogurt too cant you? I have Bariatric Advantage and make my own shakes. I'm not even at the pre op yet. I'm in the pre approval stage with insurance. But I love the shakes. Down 6 pounds so far... but an egg, I agree is ok. NO FAST food. Lol good look you CAN DO IT!!

Yes, yogurt is fine during the pre-op diet since it's considered a pudding-thick liquid. However, the yogurt needs to have less than 10 grams of sugar or else the liver won't shrink.

All Drs are different. my pre op is STRICTLY Clear Liquids, no chunks or solids. Zero sugar or carbs except for up to 4 Protein Shakes a day. And even the shakes have ingredient limits. Follow your Drs orders whatever they are! Bonus is I've lost 9 lbs in 3 days and will lose more than just Water weight before surgery

My daily (boring but working) pre op intake is: coffee with a splash of Premier Protein banana or caramel , then the rest of the Premier Protein Shake for breakfast, at 10am I have 2 C of chicken broth, at Noon I have 2 C chicken broth + another Premier Protein shake, at 2pm I have 1 sf Jello cup, at 6ish I have 2 C chicken broth (appetizer :) ) and another Carmel Premier Protein shake, 8pm snack another sf jello cup. I don't really like any other flavors of broth or I would have those. My shakes have to be under 200 calories, high protein (these are 30g) and as low sugar as you can find (1g). Premier is handy, pre made, and I like the flavors (Caramel, Banana, and strawberry Cream are my favorites). I SWEAR I have not had any headaches, and my energy level is really good (just fall asleep earlier which helps me not dwell on food).

I lost 9 lbs in the first 3 days (prob water), and have not weighed myself this week. Dr wanted me down 10 before surgery (Friday) so I am really happy with my progress. Stay positive!!

I would say to follow your doctor's order. eggs might be fine, but there might be a specific reason why he/she doesn't want you to have them. After all, a liquid diet is a LIQUID diet. I did an all liquid diet for 4 weeks, and I was fine. I think that you will find that if you are consuming Protein Shakes at least 2-3 times daily, sipping on broths, and snacking on yogurts, popsicles and Jello, you won't really get hungry. You will also lose lots of weight before surgery. You should be on day 4 now with 6 days left to go. You can do it.

I see you guys mentioning yogurt as an option for many of you in your all-liquid diet stage: What brands are your favorite? Do you have just plain yogurt or do you mix anything in them?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
