My surgeon did not let me have caffeine week before surgery. I could drink all the Decaf coffee and tea I wanted. 6 weeks post-op I was given the okay to have a caffeine drink. I choose tea. Talk with your nutritionist and surgeon about it.

Probably not while you're on pre-op but they may say you can have Decaf coffee/tea a little while later post-op.

I've grown to love coffee in the past couple of years. I have a cup every morning. Does anyone know if it is allowed during the pre op diet? And also, how about after the surgery?

It varies between surgeons. Some don't care, others do. Seems most lean towards allowing it as long as it's Decaf. Same for post-op. I'm a coffee junkie so it was hard to cut back in the beginning and became super sensitive to caffiene afterwards. Took some time but am back to normal for the most part with my coffee. Started off doing decaf only, worked my way up to half caff / half decaf, and then recently went back to regular coffee all the time.

I did consults with 5 surgeons, and cutting caffeine was on the 'things to start now' list. They told us once we are able to meet our 64 Oz Fluid goal after surgery, we can add it back. I'm day 10 post op, having my first cup and we will see how it goes. I might be bouncing off the walls soon :) one of my favorite things to do make a Protein Shake with cup of Decaf, scoop of vanilla Protein Powder, a little milk and a little Splenda and blend in the magic bullet. 20g of Protein, 15oz of liquid and a lot of frothy yumminess.

Thanks all! I will discuss with my surgeon and nutritionist. This was something that popped into my head in the middle of the night :-). The recipe sounds delicious ToSleeveOrNotToSleeve!!!

You can have coffee and tea pre op - they tell you to drink Decaf, but confessed that the only reason is because caffeine is a diuretic........pp11150330, mine will not allow milk pre op even tho I can have up to 4 Protein Shakes a day (with very specific limits re fat/protein/calories etc). I chose Premier Protein and have to be honest, I'm on day 4 of Clear Liquids (surgery is Friday) and my energy is fine, and I have not wanted to gnaw my arm off. LOL

I still drink coffee. Sometimes I put Premier Protein vanilla in it, sometimes, a little half n half and stevia. I have 3 cups a day. No restrictions from surgeon on caffeine in coffee.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
