Feeling shaky and light headed

Recommended Posts

I have basically been hungry since day 2 after surgery. I am 9 days post op and have started getting shaky and light headed, kind of a hypoglycemic feeling. I am getting in my Protein and Water and have set a timer to remind me to eat every 3 hours. I handle liquids, yogurt and some mushy foods with no issues. I will stop when I feel at little pain at the bottom of my stomach. That might be my "full" but I can't say for certain. Since I am unsure about being full I am portioning out 1/4 to 1/2 cup per meal (depending on consistency).

This might sound stupid but I'm not sure what my body is telling me I need. I know when I would feel like this pre-sleeve I would eat everything I could to make the feeling go away and was rarely successful.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you can get a blood glucose meter that would be good. When you feel that way, you could test your sugar to see if it is the culprit.

But, because you have a history of feeling that way, and eating didn't remedy it, it doesn't sound like hypoglycemia.

You might have a sensitivity to something you are consuming. Dairy (including whey in the shakes) and artificial sweeteners are common problem-causers.

That feeling of hunger is usually acid. Make sure to take your acid meds religiously.

And, of course, feel free to mention this stuff to your surgeon.

Thank you for the feedback.
I bought some Fairlife milk today and a sample of a non-whey Protein.
I made the shake this afternoon and was surprised that I could only drink 2-3 oz comfortably over 20 minutes.
I was able to drink the whey Protein Shakes much faster.
I currently take a Prilosec every morning. Is there something else I can take in addition for acid?
I'm slowly moving on to soft foods starting tomorrow so I hope to be able to consume much less artificial sweeteners. I hated them pre-op and still hate them now.

The prilosec should be good, but you could ask your surgeon if you could try a liquid antacid for when you feel hungry (immediate relief). If you still feel hungry after taking the liquid, then maybe it is actual hunger (or just the healing of your tummy).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
