Complication almost 3 weeks out

Recommended Posts

Hello all-

I had RNY on 7/31 and have been doing great! This past week has been miserable and I actually called the after hours number for advice. The resident told me they were contacting the doctors and I'd hear back.

Anyways, the past week after eating solids very slowly and chewing it up to applesauce consistency, I have been having the worst pain between my breasts as if it is getting caught. Although painful, I can deal with that. About half of the time I am very nauseous and then throw up clear slimy stuff and then feel better. Right before the vomiting I literally can not spit spitting.

It wasn't happening with drinking, but after the last vomit episode, i feel the pain with liquids. I am at loss of what to do. I can't wait to hear from the Bariatric team on their thoughts.

I'm surprised you are eating solids already.

So, calling the doctor is always the right thing to do.

The initial pain that you felt was somewhat normal when you eat foods that you aren't ready for yet, eat too fast, too much, don't chew enough or any combination.

And the "foamies" are part of that unfortunately.

But having the pain continue now even with liquids -- I don't know what to tell you on that. Your bariatric team will be your best bet.

After my RNY gastric bypass surgery, I was on full liquids for the first 4 weeks, pureed foods for the next four weeks and then only after week 9 was I transitioned to solid food. Your stomach needs time to heal. The transition to solids can be rough. There is no need to rush it.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
