After surgery and a 7 month old

Recommended Posts

I have my 7 month old and I have people for three weeks to help me with the baby after surgery. After that I am on my own from like 9-3. I will try to do most activities on the floor but if I have to lift him for his nap will it be ok by three weeks after surgery. Only lift for like naps and that's it. He is 22 pounds. I am nervous because i can't have people take off for 4-6 weeks to help me. I am already paying someone for two weeks and one week I have my husband. Anyone have this problem any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I know some surgeons are more conservative, but 10 days after surgery my doctor cleared me to lift 40#. I work with animals so I specifically asked and I was kind of surprised when he said that, but I was completely fine doing it.

It varies from surgeon to surgeon. I had no lifting restrictions after surgery. My surgeon advertises that patients could run a marathon the day after surgery if they wanted to (they wouldn't feel like it, but they could lol). I had the McCarty minimally invasive sleeve (with only 2 incisions as opposed to like 5 though) so that may be why.

Ultimately, you can feel out what your limits are (while staying within your surgeon's guidelines). For me, I was able to carry my 40 pound suitcase up the stairs at around 1.5 weeks out so I'd take a guess and think 25 pounds at 3 weeks out wouldn't give you any issues.

Check with your Dr.

It will probably help you to have some stomach support if you are going to lifting the baby. A binder, or some moderate high waist Shapewear should do the trick.

There was NOT WAY I could have gotten down of the floor and then stood back up myself 3 weeks after surgery. Can your baby stand while holding onto something? If so, you might consider keeping things on the couch where you could try to get the baby to stand next to the couch and help push their bum up onto the couch. Also, it took about 5 weeks before I was able to bend over to pick up something without pain (I had pain from my main incision). In fact, I ended up going to Walmart and getting one of those grabber things from by the pharmacy. It was so useful and I wish I had gotten it before the surgery.

40lbs at 1 week? You could have popped your stiches, thank goodness you were okay.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
