1 week post-op nausea, hot flashes, no energy

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery last Wednesday, 8/9, and thought I was doing great. No trouble hitting water/protein goals until yesterday when I started to feel really sick every time I drink anything. I get hot, start sweating like crazy and feel like I'm going to pass out. I had to start taking phenegrine again every 4-6 hours to keep anything down.

I also have no energy and go back to work tomorrow. I don't know how I'm going to make it. I fall asleep if I sit still for more than a few minutes.

Has anyone else had this problem with hot flashes & nausea? Is there anything that helps?

I had a post-op follow up with surgeon's office today and they blew it off. I had lots of vomiting in recovery after the surgery so they said it's probably just inflammation and it would go away eventually.

Well, you are only 1 week post op, the lethargy sounds about right, I wasn't able to go back to work for 2 weeks so maybe it's a little soon for you?

Also, how many calories are you getting a day? Are you hitting your Protein & Water goals?

You said your surgeon's office blew it off, my recommendation is to call them back and tell them just how miserable you are again, that you aren't keeping fluids down and you can't hit any of your numbers, maybe they will listen if you call them back? The reaction to drinking anything (and I am assuming you mean water or a protein shake/soup) is worrisome. If they won't listen to you you can always just go to an ER, let them know you aren't getting in your fluids, the surgery you had and the lightheadedness, they will probably get you on IV fluids.

Hi there!

I had my surgery on the same day! Not having those symptoms. I had some other problems tho the MD said it was the same.

Also I started my Vitamins today so that may contribute on my TMI issue.

I cant believe you're going back to work already. My MD wont let me go back for 2wks

I think you just have to keep moving. When I sit for to long I also get real tired!

Best of luck!

That reaction doesn't sound normal. It actually sounds a bit like dumping. Try to go back to the beginning and only drink Water or warm herbal tea. If those don't agree, try plain milk. Try each thing carefully, and if you find something that works, then just drink that to give your system a rest.

Protein Shakes and artificial sweeteners can be rough, so avoid them at first.

I'm able to get my Fluid and Protein goals with the phenegrine, it's just incredibly unpleasant.

My surgeon put me on full fluids when I went home from the hospital originally and it seemed to be going ok but then the hot flashes started yesterday. I've been doing 2 pure Protein Drinks, around 80oz of Water and 4-6 oz of Soup spread throughout the day. I probably have 2oz of Protein Drink or soup every couple of hours then sip water in between. I can't stand the constant sweetness of all the protein drinks but haven't found anything else that has that much protein so I keep defaulting to them.

My surgeon said I can have anything that can be pureed to a smooth paste or pourable liquid. I'm scared to try anything past broth, yogurt or Protein Shakes with all the nausea I'm having though. I think I'll try going back to just water, broth, and tea for a few days. Hopefully it'll help.

Gallbladder issues can happen, and although you are only a week postop, keep it as a possibilty in the back of your mind.

And keep an eye on your temperature.

Yep - I had some of this as well. I had my surgery on 7/31. Today was the first day I felt pretty good overall. The first week wasn't that bad - I was just tired and sore. Last week was really rough though. I would get hot flashes / sweats after every meal. I didn't really get it while drinking Water, but I was having problems hitting 64 ounces for a few days because of stomach pain and nausea. I was not throwing up though. I eventually tracked the stomach pain down to the Protein Shake I was using. Apparently I became lactose intolerant after surgery. As far as fatigue, I was hitting a wall around 1-2 in the afternoon and would need to take a nap for an hour or so. Today was the first day I felt fine and awake the whole day. Hoping it stays that way. I feel your pain though...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
