Will my taste buds ever go back to normal?

Recommended Posts

I'm 6 weeks Post Op as of yesterday and I don't feel like I am eating anything anymore. I can't stand chicken, which I used to love. Beef is alright but still hard to get down. eggs make me gag, I used to love my veggie and cheese omelette every day pre-op. Now eggs make me gag no matter how they are cooked. I CAN'T STAND BACON!! Tried a piece on Sunday and it was disgusting to me. I need Protein but everything I eat makes me nauseous unless it's vegetables. I can't live on cucumbers and ranch alone. Anyone further out than me who had the same problem early on?

The more time I heal the more I tolerate and can eat. I wasn't able to eat much until I was 3 months out. Then I started trying the more dense Proteins. I have hated eggs most of my life, post surgery I still couldn't stand them. 2 weeks ago I tried again and...I liked them!! Will your taste preferences change? Probably. Will they change in a direction you can predict? Nope. Stick with your Protein Shakes and getting in the nutrition you need using those methods your body can handle right now. I'm 10 months out and still trying out foods. Some work, some don't. Bacon and chicken are the 2 proteins I can eat with ease. Not regular Pork, not beef, not fish, not much seafood (except shrimp and crab, yay!!).

Have you tried seafood? Fish is often the go-to for many post ops. Scallops, shrimp, crab, all tender and easy on the body. You just gotta keep up with the stuff that does work and keep trying periodically on the stuff that doesn't.

If you aren't getting enough liquids or Protein in a day, you should contact your surgeon's office.

i'm getting enough Water and protein.I drink Protein water now since I can no longer stand the shakes. Each water has 15 g protein and increases my water. cucumbers are also water dense so that goes toward my count. I eat nuts, pretty much the only thing I want to eat now a days.

I can't stand fish, it's the seafood taste, that includes shellfish. I was telling my husband last night that maybe I should try giving seafood another try since my tastebuds are out of wack. We went out to eat the other night and I ordered a chicken dish, three bites in I felt like I was going to throw up. I could like taste the "game" of the chicken which is not a gamey protein. Blah.

Nuts and cucumbers (with skin, without they are better) are pretty dense, I don't think I was able to handle any nuts till I was 12 weeks out. So you are doing great on that end! Sounds like digestion won't be a problem for you.

Looks like you only can eat 2 things, as long as you are staying out of the hospital I don't really have any other suggestions for you besides to just try stuff. If nothing at all will work than hopefully you are fine nutritionally with protein water, cucumbers and ranch.

I didn't have a lot of aversion to most foods, but what I did have to do was begin looking at food as fuel and choosing things to eat based on what I needed and not what I wanted. Even when I didn't really like something so much (protein shakes as an example), I just consumed it because I needed it for my macros. That helped me get my mind in the right place.

And I agree that your tastes do change as the days and weeks go on. If you hate something now, you may end up loving it later. (That is the way salmon worked for me.)

Good luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
