Previous Hiatal Hernia Surgery Changing Everything

Recommended Posts

My surgeon told me that I could not have a sleeve due to having hiatal hernia surgery a few years ago. I need to have the bypass. Along with the bypass, he must revise the previous HH surgery.

Has anyone had this done? Was it considered more risky? Were there more complications?

I'm more anxious than I already was just having the sleeve.

I just had a sleeve revision to RNY in June. I had a sleeve in 2011 due to a repair I had to have because 2/3 of my stomach was up through y diaphragm between my lungs, headed for my heart! Definitly a hiatial hernia! However, it did not cure my acid which got completely out of control and the only way I could get rid of it was to have the RNY. I didn't have either surgery for weight loss. When he went in to do the bypass, he discovered an area on my esophagus that was so thin due to acid damage it was about to rupture, so he fixed that before he did the bypass part. I have never heard that you could not have a sleeve when you have a hiatial hernia. In fact that happens a lot, so I don't understand why he told you that. They fix the hiatial hernia first then do the sleeve. However, I have not had any regrets from the RNY. Never had any pain or nausea and now I am on all foods and everything is going great. The restriction on the RNY is greater than the sleeve, obviously, since the pouch is so much smaller than you leftover stomach with the sleeve. If you have severe acid, not sure cuz you didn't say, the RNY is the best choice. Don't be scared of the RNY. IMO the recovery is not any different than the sleeve. Too many people are scared of the bypass for some reason.

The problem was not having a hiatal hernia, but having a previous hiatal hernia surgery a few years ago. I'm sort of glad that I will have the bypass because it's supposed to be better in the long run. 😀

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
