Travel question

Recommended Posts

So if everything looks good after my EGD on August 18th my Doctor can get me into surgery on the 25th. The thing is I already have a trip to Paris planned, and paid for. Will be leaving on September 12th. The nurse I talked to said I should be fine, but I'm not sure 2 weeks will be enough time to recover. Has anyone else travelled that soon after?

I was in a similar situation with family plans and trips so I postponed my surgery till after to allow for the best healing and self care. Go to Paris and then come home and prep and focus on healing. Two weeks is really soon-I'm one week out and it's a lot of new feelings and such, including how I see food, head hunger vs real hunger-and you want max and safe results. Go enjoy Paris without worrying. Schedule for when you get back and can really focus on health and healing. Paris is a few weeks, this is forever! Go to Paris first. Enjoy every second! I say if Paris was a year out then it would be fine but two weeks is going to be rough! Don't deny yourself proper self care and healing as well as a carefree trip! [emoji173]️

I personally would not have had the energy to enjoy a vacation like that. I never took pain meds once I left the hospital, but I was very nauseous for 5 days, dizzy for about 14 days, and no energy, I mean ZERO, for 5 weeks. Some people feel fine within a week, some it takes 6 weeks or more. There is no way to predict how you will feel after the surgery. I would put off surgery until after the trip. There is a LOT one needs to focus on the first 3 months after surgery.

For me, a trip like that would be way too soon. After two weeks, I tried to take a lengthy grocery shopping trip and I failed and ended up having to leave with what I had. I was so zapped for energy, I could only imagine how I would have handled a trip. At the time, we had a trip scheduled for Universal Studios and actually, rescheduled for a later date. Health, comes first. The last thing you want to do is have an emergency w/out having your surgeon at arms length.

If you decide to go, I'd locate a WLS clinic that would be willing to see you, if the need was there. Hopefully all will go well, but you just never know.

YOU SHOULD WAIT lol WORST THING YOU COULD DO IS GO TO PARIS AND NOT BE ABLE TO ENJOY THE FOOD!!! LOL

Don't have the surgery before the trip. You're emotions are going to be all over the place, you're gonna be on a liquid diet, who wants that in PARIS! lol

Please waitttttt til after your trip!

I completely agree wait for the surgery. You will not have the energy to walk around and view the beautiful sights. I had a trip to the dr planned and put off surgery until I got back and I'm so glad I did! Enjoyed my trip and had time to recover after I had surgery.

I wasn't so much worried about the pain, as I was not having the energy to enjoy! And the chance that something could go wrong and that I would need medical care.
So while I know everyone is different there is no way to tell how I will feel 2 weeks after. Thanks for all of the replies, and telling me your experiences! I'm not going to risk it! I want to enjoy my week in Paris.

You're right. I would probably be a weepy miserable mess. I get grumpy now traveling on a plane for that long. And who can go to Paris without being tempted by chocolate croissants!

@LoraLazers I mean hellooooo you're going to Paris. It's what they are known for....imagine you being in Paris and being like "oh no, I can't try that macaron, i'm on liquids". I would die. I would climb to the top of the eifel tower and die. lol jk but seriously, after surgery...I was a total b**ch. I was in pain, sad that I couldn't eat, had no energy and your hormones are also going crazy. Enjoy the trip...glad you're waiting til after your trip to have the surgery. Eat like a queen when you're there and when you get back, have the surgery and when you're on your liquid diet, just reminisce of all the food you ate. lol

I Lowkey watched cooking tutorials on youtube and Facebook when I was on my liquid diet for 3 weeks to help me get through it. lol

I had lapband surgery in 07' so I kind of remember all of the pain and grumpiness. I lost 140 pounds with it, but unfortunately it slipped and I had to have it removed. I just now got the nerve up to do the gastric sleeve, hopefully I will have no problems this time around. I'm ready to get healthy again.

Cosigner!

Go do Paris and then come back so that you can properly take care of yourself while focusing on healing.

I was in Paris 10 weeks after Gastric Bypass surgery this summer. I did fine but I've lived and visited there many times so I spent my time visiting friends instead of walking around to all the sites. I noticed on this trip that it took a lot more time at the airport, especially in Paris, so that would have been hard 2-3 weeks after surgery. I think for this amazing trip you should delay your surgery until you return. Bon Voyage!

Thank you! I have decided to wait until after my trip to have the surgery. I can't risk it.. I have been to Paris before, but only for a day and a half.. so I didn't get to see everything I wanted to. I love exploring and sometimes end up walking 10 miles or so a day.. I want to have the energy to do that!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
