First day on soft solids Not Good

Recommended Posts

My first day on soft solids was not so good. I've been waiting all day to eat do real food because I've been at the hospital making sure I didnt have a blood clot. I had beef and broccoli that I made sure it was easy to chew to applesauce consistency. I notice I was full because it kept feeling like it was getting stuck in my chest. During the 30 minutes I was waiting before drinking it kept feeling like something was stuck in my chest or throat and it was hurting. Once time was up I tried to drink something thinking it will go away or the food will go down and no it came the other way. So just say my first day of soft food was a failure. Any help to get through this phase where should be appreciated.

Beef, anyway you cut it is not going to be soft enough. Wait on that until you are 9 weeks out. One exception may be chili.

Soft solids is like tuna salad, pinto Beans, hardboiled eggs, cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese sticks, etc. Mushy veggies are ok, but concentrate on Protein sources.

Hi, I'm post bariatric bypass. I agree that beef, even if it's mashed up can be too hard to digest. I didn't eat beef at all until after the first year. You probably don't need to wait that long, but I never really missed eating the beef. Your tastes change so much after surgery! I had surgery in 2014 and find that I'm just beginning to "want" to eat certain foods again. As stated by the prior person, stick with soft foods that you like and can tolerate. I had to stay on Protein Shakes for a long time because I just could barely get anything down. But, I don't think I had a "normal" experience as compared to most people. Hang in there, it WILL get better!

I found mince was acceptable, mince beef, mince chicken. Chicken thighs are good if you cook them with a sauce that makes it easier for your stomach. I am also enjoy fritatas

And I would think that broccolli would also be a bit difficult on the stomach at this stage. It took me a while to eat many different veggies. Yogurt, cottage cheese, that sort of thing are perfect for now. In fact, you should try the ricotta bake! I got the recipe on this web site but don't remember who exactly.

Baked Ricotta with Marinara

This is the one that everyone RAVES about!

8 oz of ricotta cheese

½ cup grated Parmesan

1 large egg, beaten

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Salt & pepper to taste

½ cup marinara sauce

½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Mix ricotta cheese, parmesan, beaten egg, seasonings together and place in a oven proof dish. Pour marinara on top and top with mozzarella cheese. Bake it in the oven @ 450 for about 20-25 minutes (best) or nuke it till hot and bubbly.

Just take your time with the food transitions. There is no need to rush. The three most important elements after weight loss surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

Yesterday was my first day on soft foods too. I ate a scrambled egg, and had a similar experience. It sat in my stomach like a lump and took most of the day for that feeling to go away. My doctor said no meat this this week. Next week I can start phasing in fish, the week after is chicken, the then pork. Beef is last, so that's still a month out. He also reccomended no broccoli or Beans for gas purposes. I can have soft veggies like cooked carrots, potatoes, green beans... I guess I was so excited to eat something that I ate too fast. I'm taking it really slow today. Started my day with a bit of cottage cheese and some canned pear. That went down just fine! Good luck to you. I hope your second day is better!

I have this experience with some foods like omeletes, though other kinds of eggs are fine. The first time I try something, I just eat a few bites, then I wait for about 5 minutes. If everything feels like it's going down okay, I proceed, but still slowly. The minute I feel like something is just hanging out in my esophagus, I stop, and then try to not freak out as it kind of travels up and down. I haven't vomited, but it's felt awful until it clears up. Just go slow!!

Broccoli even when chewed is really high Fiber, at 3 months out I am just now handling some fiber. I use fiber powder in all my shakes.

Beef as someone else mentioned is hard to get moist enough to handle. I spent most of my soft food stage on greek yogurt mixed with Protein Powder and Soups with very small pieces of meat. I couldn't even handle scambled eggs or more than one bite of mashed potatoes.

Your body will let you know what its ready for :)

good luck!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
