Soft Drinks vs Band

Recommended Posts

Anyone help me! ive read No soft drinks after lap band and ive read elsewhere that u can still drink soft drinks..........................

love to hear others views about drinking softdrinks meaning coke etc,,,,

does it damage the balloon inside the band?????

And how much softdrink do u guys consume a day....

I dont consume alot now (meaning b4 band) i only have 2 glasses of pepsi max with my meals,,, well after getting the band there wont be any drinking with the meal so that means NO Pepsi max for me!

I'm a Pepsi addict and since being banded can't tolerate pepsi. I switched to Mt. Dew and do 1/2 and 1/2. I get 1 22oz every day from the store in the AM.

WARNING: this will sabatoge weight loss. Believe me!!! I have only lost 14 pounds in 4 months and I think it's because I haven't changed what I eat...only the quantity of what I eat. But soda goes right down w/o restriction. So liquid candy is a no no for weight loss.

I drank lots of soda before my band. Now (since being banded), I don't drink any soda. Believe me I tried to drink it but it actually hurts my stomach and I get severe shoulder pain (from the gas in the soda). I havent drank soda in over 3 years and I don't miss it one bit.

Carbonated beverages

The arguments against drinking carbonated beverages are these;

1. Most soda is very high in calories. The additional calories may be sufficient to prevent weight loss. The Lap-Band is designed to help people eliminate between 500 and 1,000 calories daily from their food intake, which equals 1-2 pounds per week of weight loss. As an example, regular Pepsi-Cola has 150 calories per 12-ounce can. It would only take 3-6 cans per day to wipe out the calories lost from eating less food. Of course, artificially sweetened beverages like Pepsi Max will have fewer or even no calories. Of course Beer also falls into this category, with 143 calories for a Budweiser, or 95 calories for a Bud Light.

2. Some doctors believe that carbonation *may* cause the "pouch" or "upper stomach" to expand. That would be a "pouch dilatation". Diagnosis for a pouch dilatation is done with a barium swallow under fluoroscope. Normal treatment for a pouch dilatation is a complete unfill and a liquid diet for a period of time, normally between 2 and 4 weeks, followed by a fill. It is unusual to fill the band to the previous level after a total unfill for a pouch dilatation.

3. Some doctors believe that the increased downward pressure caused by trapped gas *may* cause the Lap-Band to slip.

If there are any other arguments against drinking carbonated beverages, I am unaware of them.

Doctors have very different opinions on the consumption of different foods and drinks after Lap-Band. Your doctor may not agree with one or any of the above reasons, which is why it is always best to ask your doctor.

I was a Dr. Pepper lover. I would drink 5-6 a day. Before I started my pre-op diet I thought I would die without it. I haven't had 1 in 5 weeks & I am doing just fine without it.

I was told by my dr that I couldn't have soda until 6 months after surgery. Right now I am thinking that when that 6 months comes up I am not even going to have a Pepper. I am afraid that if I start again I may not be able to quit again.

I LOVE diet Coke (several cans/big gulps a day. I have decided that I will quit this addiction before surgery to prove to myself I am ready to follow the guidelines. I have 4 cans of diet Coke left....then it's GONE!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
