nat0410 0 Posted August 13, 2017 I had surgery on Tuesday & haven't had a bowl movement since Sunday. My tummy is so sore today! I've been drinking some prune juice along with my liquid diet. I've also been adding benefiber. Did anyone else have this issue?
combrat 8 Posted August 13, 2017 Yes I have that issue so I came home and used my Miralax. Now I have added Metamucil to my miralax.
James Marusek 5,244 Posted August 13, 2017 Generally after surgery, you are on a full liquid diet. So it is common to not have a bowel movement at the beginning. liquids in - liquids out. 1 CocoNina reacted to this

monicaholbrook 8 Posted August 13, 2017 I think you should try a stool softener, miralax is okay too. I do think metamucil is too much base on a liquid diet. Like James said, "liquid in and liquids out." Your doctor right, base on Protein Shake and liquids you will have some BM, but not as much. However, you will feel like you have to go #2, but believe me it will be mostly passing gas. Sent from my LG-K540 using BariatricPal mobile app

JewlzInFL 11 Posted August 22, 2017 Same here. Had my surgery Wednesday and haven't BMd since Saturday. Gonna try Mirilax tomorrow. It's also due to pain killers.
CocoNina 210 Posted August 22, 2017 I had Constipation from consuming so much Protein (liquids) my first few weeks post-op. What worked best for me was milk of magnesia. Call your doctor or nurse because sometimes taking laxatives, etc... might make you dehydrate since you're only consuming liquids & that's all that going to come out. crocodoxie 223 Posted August 23, 2017 When Miralax and DulcaEase didn't do a thing, I turned to Smooth Moves tea. Was the only thing that worked. I had a very miserable 17 days prior!!! 1 FluffyChix reacted to this
newyou19 3 Posted August 26, 2017 3wks post op and had the same issue. You'll move soon and colace is helping my Constipation.
KarenInOz 6 Posted September 2, 2017 You also have to be careful not to use a laxative but a stool softener instead as some laxatives cause the bowel to expand and contract which they don't want to happen during the healing process..I only found that out by accident as I was going to use a laxative I'd used prior to surgery [emoji4]
gomezk2 24 Posted September 8, 2017 My surgeon suggested miralax to take. Miralax takes time to be effective. He also suggested dulcolax suppositories if it gets really bad. Right now i am doing miralax and it takes 2-3 days to work but it creates alot of gas for me and too much rumblings in my stomach. Also if needed an enema would help also. UnicornsAndGlittah 21 Posted September 8, 2017 My surgeon instructed his patients to do 30cc's of Milk of Magnesia every 8 hours until you have a bowel movement. He suggests this if there is no bowel movement for 4 days. I'm day 16 post-op, and still having issues, and this works like a charm after only taking it once. I'm going to include Benefiber or something as well, as suggested by my team, to increase the bulk.Sent from my LGLS676 using BariatricPal mobile app
