I started the process January 9 of this year. The surgeon submitted everything on July 24th I am just waiting to find out if I have been approved. My next appointment the 24th is just a weigh-in. If approved I start 2 week liquid diet then surgery, my surgeon told me the process could be up to 6 weeks. It has been a long process. I had to have bloodwork, EKG, gallbladder ultrasound. All finished, but then I had to have up to date pap and mammogram as well. Talk about jumping through hoops. Thankful for the gallbladder ultrasound though I have gallstones that I never knew I had. Hoping I get good news on the 24th and have a surgery date.

Really- best decision ever to have this surgery! It is hard sometimes, especially in the beginning. But all worth it. I'm 5 weeks post RNY and it's getting easier timing my Water and meals, which was hard in the beginning. Good luck!! You will do great!!

Good luck on your surgery. At this point, I would recommend three things.

1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success.
2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery.
3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.

What type of insurance do you have. I have BCBS and was approved overnight. My surgery is Aug 28th.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
