Pre-op Diet

Recommended Posts

I started the pre-op diet officially yesterday. Protein shakes all day and low fat & carb dinner at night - must be no bigger than the size of my hand. I've been doing it off and one since Monday but yesterday was the big starting day. 2 weeks to go!!! :whoo:

I have a question. Is anyone else having stomach cramps?

Ok, so I am so totally sucking at the 2-week pre-op diet. Well, maybe that's a little harsh, but I know I could be doing better. I've been having my Protein Drinks in the morning, then I get ONE solid meal which I choose to make that lunch because - um, going all day until dinner without solids? Are ya' kiddin' me???? It could get ugly, my friends. I am so hungry, you guys!!!! Aaa! Help!

Andie,

you are doing better than me. I am totally scared of those Protein drinks so I skipped them today and had my dinner for lunch. Today wasn't too bad for me, but tomorrow I think will be a huge struggle.

The Protein Drinks really aren't that bad. You just have to find the right one. So far, the only one I've tried is Designer whey <plain/unflavored>. I bought one of those shakers for it too. A meal, for example: today for Breakfast, I mixed it with lowfat yogurt, vanilla soy milk and 1 scoop of Protein powder. Shook the hell out of it and it actually tasted really good! lunch was some cheese and lean meat <ugh!> then a shake about 2 hours later... and now I'm STARVING!!!!!! <sigh>

Andie, after the first two days or so I wasn't that hungry. I just have 3 Protein Shakes a day with V8 in between if I'm still hungry. If you drink a LOT of Water, especially with your Protein Shake, you'll find that helps with hunger. I still get hunger pains at night at bedtime, but not during the day.

Thanks Linda. That's great advice. I'm definitely going to knuckle down the rest of my 2 week period and try really hard to stay on my liquid/1-meal plan. I can do this! No problem!!!! Hehehe...

You guys are doing so well. I'm proud. :)

I'm so nervous! I start up on liquids on the 6th or 7th. DH and I are having our big Thanksgiving dinner this Sunday since I'll be on liquids when the date rolls around. We don't have Thanksgiving with any other family, so it works out well.

I've been living it up with food. I didn't realize how much I TRULY did restrain myself before. Now that I've given myself permission to eat all the things I'd like to stay away from after the band (or at least in VERY limited quantities), I'm kind of scared of myself. LOL But the thing is, I'm kind of looking forward to kicking all of this stuff to the curb! DH and I are going to have a cleaning the cupboards party (he wants to lose weight, too - about 30 lbs).

So...on a liquids diet, did your doctor TELL you what to drink (ie, Protein shakes, broth, etc), or did he just say as long as it was a low-carb liquid (obviously not sodas or the like) and you were getting in enough Protein, it was up to you?

Hey guys!! I'm jumping on the pre-op diet with you guys so make some room!!

Today is my first day, so far for Breakfast I had 6 oz of Yogurt and a Carb control Protein Shake. I am hungry but keep telling myself that this will be the hardest part.

My diet doesn't allow for any real food so I just have to get used to it for the next 10 days. I know that I'm on the road to being healthy! :(

7 Days until Surgery-- OMG!!!!! Anyway, I started my two week preop diet and I was devastated the first day or two because I failed miserably. I thought, what the hell am I doing, and for about two days I seriously considered backing out of this because I did not know if I could do this.

Since this past Monday I have been kicking butt on weight loss, 5lbs without exercising a lot (walking only around work-large facility, doing the stairs instead of the elevator). I have not been perfect my first week. The first two days were a disaster and then since then I have had several cans of Healthy Choice chicken & Rice Soup, yogurt almost every day, and over the week I have had three handfuls of pecans and today I had a banana. The banana was the big mistake because I went into ketosis yesterday or the day before and the banana could be enough to take me back out of it.

The surgery group I am using has an inconsistent policy about the preop diet. They asked me to do it, but in one of our group sessions there were several gals there (much larger than me) and they were not required to do a preop diet.

I was freaking about the preop diet originally, but it has afforded me time to figure things out before the band is on. Number one, find a Protein source you can live with. This has been the hardest thing for me. I finally found Natures Best Isopure premade drinks at GNC (they have a bunch of different flavors and they are clear so I will be able to have them postop-my doctor has me on Clear liquids for two weeks post op). These drinks have 40 grams of whey isolate Protein and if you drink about a 1/4 cup every couple of hours it keeps your blood sugar really stable and it has really helped with the hunger. I have resisted candy, cake, and a bunch of other bad things this week and I credit that mostly to the Isopure.< /p>

Anyway, good luck to you. I am feeling nervous, excited, scared, etc... But the one think I am not feeling (at least right now) is whether or not I can do this. I am feeling pretty secure at this moment that I can change my weight, my lifestyle, my eating habits, and I am confident the band is the tool to help me. Hopefully I will be feeling this way two weeks from now....

Sincerely,

MollyBrown

I continue to struggle. My biggest problem with food is that I am a binge eater. I can eat normal amounts of food, lose weight, feel great and than out of no where binge eat. I usually binge eat until I gain every pound back and plus more.

My surgery requirement was for me to see a Psychologist, Nutritionist, and Behavioral Specialist. My big problem is that I will eat everything possible than promise myself never to do that again, only to do it again.

The band will be a tool to help me relearn how to eat normal and not to binge eat. I feel like food has been the focus of my life for too long.

My pre-op diet is easy but it is still a struggle for me. I have two of those high Protein low sugar slim fast drinks, and a low carb low fat dinner. After my surgery date I will have the Isopure drinks.< /p>

Stephanie that is a good ideal to Celebrate your Thanksgiving now. I had kind of a food going away party. I have eaten every food I think I might crave so I know in my mind that I am not missing anything when I crave it after surgery.

Traci, sounds like you are doing great. That motivates me to stay on track.

MollyBrown, The diet team at my hospital isn't really strict about the diet but they do require a 10% weight loss before surgery. They highly recommend the Protein shakes, but they are not totally strict if we don't.

Keep up the good work everyone.

MollyBrown, you are 44 years old . I wish Lap Band was available to me when I was 44 (now I am 55). You are making a great decision, because chances are, you would remain on the same roller coaster of weight gain and loss and accompanying misery for the next 10 years as I have done. I am keeping a Word document with all the good ideas I read in these posts, and I am surely going to check on the Isopure. My blood sugar plummets and I feel really bad on a liquid diet - plus those shake things gag me as well! You go girl! You got what it takes to push through. Only 5 more days to go!

I have to start my pre-op on the 6th (10 days pre-op) but I may start tomorrow just to get on with it. I have to do Clear Liquids only except for 90 grams of Protein from protein drinks of any sort as long as it has less than 200 calories and 5 grams of sugar per serving. I also will be on this for 4 weeks post-op. This is a lot different than my MIL who was banded in Texas last week and is already on mushies. But I have already made up my mind that I am going to just follow what my doctor says no matter how hard it seems.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
