Will I really be able to lose with the band?

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone:

My papers were just sent into insurance this week. I am worried that I will fail at this band change of life just as I have failed for the past 20 years.

Is there anyone else who shared my feelings before surgery and who has had the surgery? Any advice is welcome, Thanks, Shawna

I have the same thoughts. I'm being banded on 10/19. I wonder if I'm doing the right thing? Will this work? Can I live with it? Etc.

I think if we didn't have doubts we wouldn't really be prepared. We have to remember that it's a tool - albiet a good tool - we still have to diet.

Unlike bypass, we will have to work to loose weight.

However, when I diet what ruins it for me is succumbing to comfort food - LOTS of comfort foot. With the band in the sweet spot that everyone talks about huge quantities of comfort food will not be possible. That's part of what worries me.

But it will work - because I'll make it work.

I had the same thoughts but now that I'm banded I remind myself that I'm going to do it! I can lose weight, I just can't keep it off so I think the band will help me keep it off. I think you will be surprised at how good a tool the band can be.

I also think its important to have a good support group. This is a great message board, I also joined a Yahoo message board and attend a support group at the hospital. I have very supportive friends also. I am really lucky. It really helps to have people around who are going through the same thing. Beth

Oh my goodness yes. Everything else failed...so why not this, too? Only makes sense. Right?

This works because it's the only thing that does make sense... actaully cut off the pipes.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
