Flying with the BAND

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am going on a trip next week and will be flying to Cuba.

Has anyone had any issues with flying and the band? Did you take any prot. shakes with you just in case you swole up ???

Or am I worrying for nothing?

:cry

I have flown a few times with the band. The cabin pressure did change my band both times, but the 2nd time was the day after a fill and it was very bad! I was fine the first time, but definately take shakes, just in case. We never can tell from one day to the next what our 'band buddies' will do!

=:eek:=

Never have I experienced any extra pressure in my band from flying... some say they do, some think it's all in those people's heads :eek:

I'd take some Protein powder or whatever JUST in case you have any kind of incident while there, but not because you're going to be flying...

I fly all of the time and i don't have any problems with the band's restriction and what not, but i beeped one time going through security. When they checked me with the long black stick thingy, it went crazy at my port... lol

Sometimes I have issues, other times its fine. I take Protein Shakes with all the time. I was just in Mauritius and struggled to find food I could eat with enough Protein so I supplemented with shakes. Enjoy your vacation. I have wanted to go to Cuba for a long time - I am jealous. Celeste

I just returned from my first trip after being banded and I did not experience any discomfort inflight. As a matter of fact I was able to enjoy a cup or two of coffee along with some Breakfast. Hopefully you will be OK. Have fun in Cuba.

Hi, I've not had any issues with the band expanding when flying. I've had a few problems with setting off security alarms with the band. It was most trying to have to try and explain with people gawking. One security person's face showed that she was so completely disgusted that I burned with anger and frustration for the whole flight. Urrghh. The good news is that not all security machines pick up on the band - it's a little like Russian Roulette.

I was stopped at one of the security posts at the Winnipeg airport and not the others. I have never had a problem with Toronto at all. Maral (from TLBC) was saying that she used to do quite a bit of travelling and found it to be hit and miss in terms of security alarms. She thought that the machines may be differently calibrated.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
