Angie's_Ocean 213 Posted August 10, 2017 Although I have decided to do this (the gastric bypass) for the weight loss also, which I have suffered since I was 6yrs. old, my main reason is my health and my family. Yes, I look forward to the day I might be able to wear shorts for the first time in my life. However, I also look forward to the day I'm not constantly stressing about my diabetes. For a year now my sugar levels have through the roof and uncontrollable. Last Christmas and in June again I got the biggest scare of my life when my meter wasn't even reading my sugar levels. I am now on insulin and not even that is working. I chose to go on a Liquid Protein diet last week and I don't even have a surgeon picked or date yet. Only Water, coffee, and Protein Shakes all day, and some meat and dry salad for dinner.< /p>This was at the suggestion of a family member who also suffered through this until his VSG. I thought no way is this gonna work but I'll humour him. It's tough but it seems to be working wonders! I'll keep doing it until I have this bypass because I know if I don't I might be on an insulin pump next year or even worse I might not be here in 5-10 yrs.Sorry for the long post, I just needed to vent I know there are people worse off and I should not be having a pity party. James Marusek 5,244 Posted August 10, 2017 I had RNY gastric bypass surgery over 4 years ago. The primary reason why I had the surgery was to correct several health conditions caused by my obesity. These included high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, severe acid reflux (GERD) to name a few. I was on 2 types of prescription medicine for my high blood pressure and two types for my diabetes. Even then they were not well controlling the conditions. The day I left the hospital, 2 days after surgery, I was off all my diabetes medicine and I haven't taken any since. My blood sugar levels were back to normal. I periodically test them still once per month just to make sure. About 2 weeks after surgery, I went off all my high blood pressure medicines. Almost all of my health conditions went into remission and I am happy. As far as diabetes, many individuals on this site report the same experience as mine. But it varies. Those that had diabetes for many, many years don't fair as well. Also those that have progressed to insulin shots also don't fair as well. But even then the amount of drugs to combat diabetes is reduced significantly. 3 Mrs.J, Precious517 and FluffyChix reacted to this
Berry78 4,261 Posted August 10, 2017 Pity party? I don't think so! You are empowering yourself to become a healthier person! Someone that is wallowing in misery is gonna sob about that twinkie they are getting ready to shove into their mouth. (And then proceed to do just that). As you are experiencing, a dramatic change to your diet can drastically change YOU. The scale #, your illness progression, etc. That is the power of the surgery (plus a bunch of metabolic/hormonal changes as well). Good for you, taking the bull by the horns! 2 FluffyChix and Precious517 reacted to this

And I'm at the office no less [emoji23]I'm self pay so I can pick a date. If I could get this done yesterday I would. I just need to sort through some personal and family things going on right now and be patient until September or October. Hopefully sooner rather than later [emoji1431]Sure I look forward to the nice clothes and the compliments but most of all I look forward to having enough energy to get through my day and not having to stop and take a break every time I'm walking somewhere with my husband. His energy levels are insane!!!

Berry78 4,261 Posted August 10, 2017 I got the sleeve. I had high blood pressure but no diabetes or gerd. The preop liquid diet was really hard, but the liquid postop diet was sooo much better.

Angie's_Ocean 213 Posted August 11, 2017 Its great you're turning things around! What kind of shakes are you drinking? Trying to decide between Premier Protein and the Atkins shakesI'm currently drinking Nutracelle. My cousin who was sleeved last year had some lying around and gave it to me. I haven't actually ordered any myself but apparently it's a subscription type company. It's not sweet or thick at all if anything it tastes like flavoured Water and dissolves really good in a shaker cup. It doesn't need a blender or anything.
