Cross addiction or addiction transfer??

Recommended Posts

I'm considering WLS and doing my research. One of my concerns is addiction transfer. I do know a few wls that have moved their compulsive eating to other addictions. i.e. Gambling, shopping, sex, bulimia, etc. I do have OCD behaviors and am afraid to transfer compulsions. I'm lucky alcohol and drugs don't appeal (or agree) with me. I haven't had a cigarette in 7 years. But looking back, when I've lost a lot of weight in the past, I do see some compulsive patterns. Any experiences or insight ?

Hummmmm, it's hard to tell... My experience is that I stopped smoking after being banded and haven't started again since. As far as compulsive behavior goes: I spend more money on stuff but nothing I couldn't afford so I don't see this as a big deal. Alcohol I drink once in a while.

I feel that I'm more anxious about things. More nervous and restless in general. I guess that is my ADHD kicking in harder.

I have (diagnosed) OCD . I'm 7 weeks out. So far so good. What I can say is having someone around you that you can be honest with. And tell if you feel you are doin things you would not usually.

I have had to check myself a few times. Be honest with your surgeon.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
