Sipping one or two ounces every 15 minutes!!

Recommended Posts

Keeping hydrated is essential to prevent dehydration. Surgeon ordered me to sip one ounce of liquid every 15 minutes. But one ounce i think is not enough to meet the daily requirement to keep hydrated. If i take 2 ounces instead every 15 minutes will it jeopardize or do any harm to my pouch?

Just wanna keep hydrated but taking one ounce every 15 minutes seems like a long dreadful thing.

Any comments will be appreaciate it.

Ours said 1oz minimum, and if you can tolerate more it's OK.

I had RNY on 7/27 and was told to have 2oz liquid every 15 minutes you are awake and 2oz Protein every hour. I have to do this for 3 weeks post op. Clear liquid shouldn't be a problem.

Dietician said cup in an hour, no speed recommendation other than start off slowly. I can do about three ounces at a time (but I know when I get to soft/regular food, that volume will be impossible). Post op 7/25

Mine said the same thing. 1oz per 15 minutes. I poured a 4oz drink and would drink over an hours time. Even doing that faithfully I struggled to get the 64oz a day they said to drink. I was lucky if I got 30oz but I never got dehydrated. I did drink it a little to fast one time and felt nauseous but it passed quick. I've drank my Protein Shake too fast 2x's since then and still get a little nauseous and I'm almost 4 months post op.

I was told to drink 8 oz per hour. Sometimes I am able to drink more. I think if it hurts or is uncomfortable when you drink too much, your body will tell you.

Magen I was in the hospital after RNY, I was afraid if I had too much too fast I'd rip my pouch. I even asked my surgeon and he said, just sip and you'll be fine.

It seems like other people in here have had swallow studies and watched the liquids go straight down and out of the pouch.

Not sure how long thin liquids really stay in your pouch.

Yep, 1 oz-2 oz worked for me. I found myself doing 2 oz. without a problem. They did suggest to dilute my Protein Shake early out. Like AZBlackhawk mentioned, my tummy tells me if only 1 will go down that 15 mins.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
