Thank you. I thought this would be the case, which means I have to have a permanent breakup with brothy Soups post WLS *sob*. *hic*. It's so surprising some of the little things that become huge in our minds. Right? And yet, I still, like an addict, want to see if I can MacGiver the crap outta Soup. You know? Like, what if I strain it and drink the broth 30 minutes before a meal, then eat the strained solids as the meal. Such goofy head games. You know?

So if it's a stewpy kind of soup like chili--something with very dense and minor liquid portion, is it ok, or do you still need to strain out some of the solids and eat only them? Not trying to work around, just adding to my encyclopedia of WLS for do's and definite don'ts. TIA hon!

I strain it, it tastes way better than broth. When I get to the pureed stage, I'll just vitamix the hell out of it!

I would like to do this. I see myself following this same path.

I really wish Soup didn't fill me up as soon as I start eating it, I usually remove the liquid and just eat the meat and veggies. Drab! lol :D

We were actually advised that if we did have a brothy soup, to strain and eat 30 minutes apart.

VERY thick stews, chilis etc...I just eat as is. And I'll sub similar tasting, lower carb veggies.

Yeah, I hear ya on the subbing for lower carb veggies. I heart using cauliflower, radishes, turnips, zucchini and yellow squash, mushrooms, and a sometimes a tiny bit of rutabaga in place of traditional things like potatoes, barley. Also I add a buttload of chopped greens in my Soups to add to the chew factor. Thanks so much for helping with the practical, information gathering!! ((hugs))

Great point! It's definitely not apples and apples in this scenario.

Ok, me thinks peeps tend to overthink the Soup thing.

For those that are healing, obviously follow your post op phases. No chunks on purees and the like.

For those on a regular diet, measure your soup, count the calories, and enjoy! If you get hungry before the next meal.. either suck it up, or decide soup isn't worth it.

All this talk of straining solids.. come on! food should be nourishing and enjoyable, not turning us all into wild-eyed cokeheads...

Frothing at the mouth..

"BUT THERE ARE CHUNKS IN MY SOUP!"

My doc and nutritionist consider Soup food and not a drink. They don't apply the no drinking/eating together to soup.

I've followed their instructions and done just fine. I am not a huge soup eater to begin with so it's only a couple times a year. Now chilli I do all the time! Four years out and about 1/2 a cup is a meal, it's quite filling.

      Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

        As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
