Health issues (high BP and Cholesterol)

Recommended Posts

Hello all. I am considering the sleeve due to my health issues, my doctor also recommended it. With that said, I would like to know how this procedure helped with health issues you had. If you had high BP and cholesterol before do you still have it now? Are you off all pills. Thanks :)

I'm in the same boat as you. I have HBP and other issues that my Dr is hoping the surgery will help with. Looking forward to hearing from someone on this.

I have high blood pressure due to primary aldosteronism (basically my adrenal glands producing too much hormone which increases BP). I had surgery 15 May and have come off 2/3 medications. The third one I will be on for life because of the PA. I used to take cholesterol mess but have been off them long before the surgery however my latest blood tests showed normal levels. Not sure at which point they became normal. Losing weight will help your whole body function better

I was on BP meds for 24 years. I have been completely off of them since the day after surgery. I'm 7 months post op. Also off my CPAP.

Off all BP meds since the day after surgery. Also off CPAP. All cholesterol levels are normal. I'm 7 months out.

I went in with both of these issues, yes. Within DAYS of the surgery, I was OFF of the Diabetic meds and Water pills. Additionally, the Atorvastatin and Losartan were reduced to the lowest available doses.

It's been 19 months and I've lost 1 full grown man. I am still on the last 2 meds, yes. The BP med should be gone in another 25-30 pounds. The Cholesterol meds will be re-evaluated in that same window. I honestly believe that they will be with me until I can stay under 220 (preferably closer to 200).

I still consider the decision to have the surgery a Life Saving move - my only "regret" is that I had it in 2015 instead of earlier in my life.

Thank you all so much for the replys. So glad this journey has been a life changing experience. I think I will do this so my life can improve as well. I am not severely over weight, weighing in at 240, 5'4", but to be 36 yrs old and have a total cholesterol of 262 and high BP I feel right now is the prime time in my life to get this started.

I've thought about bariatric surgery for years. I only did it this year because my blood pressure was going sky high. I had a lot of stress and I thought that was it. The Meds for BP made me so sick.

well, I was sleeved July 19th. Two weeks before that, of course I was on the pre op diet, which I called a starvation diet. Two Protein Drinks and one meal of a piece of meat with some veggies. During those two weeks, I kept taking my BP every day, and it went way down. It went into the yellow on the graph and no longer always up high in the red zone. Amazing.

And now it has been two weeks since surgery, and nearly every BP reading (I do twice a day) is in the normal range. What?? I haven the even lost that much weight yet. It is AMAZING and it is a huge relief for me.

i have six months of BP charts all RED with really high BP. Then boom, the pre op diet dropped it into the yellow "moderately high" range. And post surgery all but one lone reading has been NORMAL.

We want to live long and healthy. So glad I took this step.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
