Severe pain left side under ribcage, worse when inhaling

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'll be three weeks out as of Monday and have been experiencing pretty bad pain on my left side under my rib cage. It's especially sharp when I inhale and when I'm lying down on either side, as well as after I eat or drink.

My surgeon wanted to rule out any complications from surgery including a blood clot so he sent me to the ER a few days ago, where I got blood tests, an x-ray and a CT scan but aside from being dehydrated according to my blood tests and them finding a small cyst on my spleen (which they said should not be causing pain), all were normal.

I've heard that this pain can be normal after surgery as the left side is usually where they make the largest laparoscopic incision, but this pain isn't near the incision site. It's quite painful - a bit better with my Percoset, but I don't want to get hooked on it so I've been taking it very sparingly. Tylenol doesn't touch it.

Has anyone had experience with this?

When I got sharp nabbing pain under the ribs and it got worse with a deep breath or yawn or something, it was gas. I've gone to the ER for it twice and told it was gas, that was embarrassing--but I'm glad everything else was ruled out. Not saying this is it for you, but if you've had the tests, it could most likely be just that. Take some gas x and see if that'll help. Hope it does!

I was gonna say it coyld be related to constipation.. plenty of intestines around that area too.

My pain which I described the same way turned out to be pneumonia. Call your surgeon just to discuss

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
