Why can't we swallow pills whole????

Recommended Posts

I was allowed to swallow pills (as long as they weren't huge) right from the get go. All the literature they gave me said to crush or go to liquid form but when I met with the surgeon before surgery he dismissed that and said it's fine. He was right. It's been no issue at all.

I think it is only in the beginning when your stomach is healing and still swollen.. The same concept as that you can only eat a very small amount in the beginning

I can tell you what we were told: It depends on the size of the pill. If it's teeny-tiny you can swallow it. Otherwise you should crush them for the first four weeks. After that just swallow them whole.

I don't know if my treatment team was overly cautious or not. I only had to take the PPI which meant opening the capsules and swallowing tasteless little pellets so I didn't really mind it.

Caution: not every pill should be crushed! Ask a pharmacist if you're unsure!

They had my pills crushed in the hospital for had my take a liquid version if possible. My Protonix couldn't be crushed so I had to take it by injection until my 1 week post op when my doc said I could go ahead and swallow it. I now swallow all my pills. I take Levothyroxine for my thyroid and I was actually absorbing to much and have to have my levels adjusted and that was without crushing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
