Recommended Posts

My Dr said we can have caffeine once we get start hitting our daily 64 Oz fluid goals. But cautioned against it since it's a diuretic.

Check with your team. I was given a cup of coffee in the hospital the day after surgery! Granted it was supposed to be Decaf and the tray was wrong, but my RD said if I kept it down, I could drink it - she knew I was a major coffee drinker. I've been drinking it since. My favorite way to do it in the morning is three shots of espresso over ice and add a Premier Caramel pre-mixed Protein Shake - Yummy!

Omg you're not kidding about the "major coffee drinker" part!! Bon apetit!

I'm supposed to wait 6 weeks. I don't really want to go back to caffeine, though. I've been drinking Decaf and I'm good with that. This from someone who would drink 3 large, Creamer filled cups of coffee in the morning to wake up then have a soda at lunch, pre surgery. Plus Starbucks once in a while when I was stressed, or had to get away from work, or just wanted something sweet, or to celebrate....you get the point!!

I'm with Diana. My doc said as long as I could tolerate it I could drink it. I didn't start in the hospital but I started maybe 2-3 weeks post op.

I drink Decaf cold brew. When it is cold brew it takes the acid out of the coffee. I have always tried to drink decaf so I will continue to. I pour about four ounces of cold brew over ice and then pour in y Premier Protein either vanilla or caramel and it tastes just like a Starbucks.

I'm not a big coffee drinker. I was told to avoid it since it's a diuretic. I avoid anything with caffeine in it. Tried Crystal Light with that stuff in it and got a bad Migraine. I'm not going through that again and Crystal Light has only like 5 grams of caffeine in it. Now I just get the fruity flavored ones...

Actually the research shows coffee isn't the diuretic people think and only causes a very small increase in urine output if drunk in large amounts (3-4 cups of coffee) after a period of deprivation.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
