BMI:52 ready to do the surgery, afraid of "DEATH"!!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I have a BMI of 52 and apparently I'm a candidate of gastric bypass surgery. My only problem is that when I search on the internet I find many, many cases of death. I don't fear death personally, but I'm not in a condition to leave my family and this is the only problem I have with this surgery. Now, can you please tell me how 'real' is the 'danger' in this surgery? Should I be worried?

Many many thanks in Advance.

And when I search about this thing, I find many replies (over on the internet) such as : Your obesity is more dangerous and such things... I do understand that obesity has billions of dangers to it, but my question is how "DANGEROUS" is gastric bypass surgery?

Thanks.

Every seminar I've been to, every Dr I've talked too, all say the risks of staying obese and dying from obesity are higher than the surgery itself.

Plus, preop testing is thorough. Depending on age/weight you might have various tests such as pulmonary, cardiac, Egd to look at your esophagus, blood work, ekg, x-rays and a psychological exam. They make sure you're ready for it. They say the risks are about equal with gall bladder surgery. Plus, you are almost immediately put on a healthy diet to shrink your liver to prepare for surgery.

But, the higher you are, it is more risky. And almost everyone will ask you to lose a little before surgery to have you even healthier.

So, it's not like they don't do a thorough job before hand. If they find issue, they treat it and continue the process.

Good Morning ZKzave:

I fully understand your predicament and your fear of DEATH! In my opinion, DEATH is the end of the circle of what we call life. Since you have a BMI of 52 you are already running the risk of dying. I recommend that you start mentally preparing yourself before the surgery, pray and ask God to watch over you and your loved ones to ensure a positive outcome after the surgery. Also, talk to your family and seek guidance and encouragement. Also, I'm sure you will receive so many positive feedbacks from the members of the community.

Good luck and I'll send a special prayer for you.

Do your research on your surgeon. Check his/her statistics. Check his/her reviews here and online.
Yes, sometimes complications happen. My headband had some with his surgery 11 years ago, but now he is healthy and has maintained a more than 100 pound weight loss.
There are far more complications from obesity that weight loss will correct. Diets don't work for most people. If you want your life back surgery maybe the only option. I've lost just 30 pounds and already have so much more energy have put diabetes behind me and feel so much better
Don't let fear rule your life anymore. Make an informed thoughtful decision and stick to it.

Good luck. Praying for peace for you through the process.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
