A little bummed out...

So I went to the doctors today. I had my Sleeve on June 27th and I'm down 23lbs! I'm pumped, but she said by my 2 month apt I should really be down 40 lbs.. now I feel pressured and I'm not doing as well as I should be! Anyone feel that way?

Sorry to hear you're feeling that way. I, personally, have so much shame and guilt about my weight to work through that I would've been really upset. I would hope that the doc had some constructive and useful feedback regarding some adjustments you might look into. Losing 23 lbs in 2 months is still pretty darn good!

I find it odd that a doctor would set a specific weight goal. Everyone loses at their own pace. Don't let this discourage you.

Oh for crying out loud. You are certainly SUCCESSFUL! Congratulations and keep it up. Obviously the doctor needs some kind of sensitivity training or something--or (s)he is just plain unhelpful in the post-op world. Ignore the comment if you can and move forward. You will prevail.

What else did the doctor say though? It may be that at whatever your weight was it is "normal" to be down more. It just may mean keeping a food diary to show your doctor in case tweaks need to be made. I don't think the doctor was necessarily shaming you but was more stating what they considered to be medically average and it may mean for them to be aware if you are having any difficulties, Vitamin deficiencies or depression. I would recommend speaking with your doctor regarding what they meant by their statement and how it made you feel.

That does seem odd since my doctor won't even talk about weight goals yet, though I'm a few weeks behind you (July 17). His nurse cautioned me to "keep my goals close", basically to keep them short-term and easily achievable and don't worry about the big picture, long-term right now.

The surgeon was much more focused on what I'm doing. Not only is that what is going to determine your long-term success, it is, in fact, the ONLY thing you have any control over.

He reminded me yet again to exercise/walk and be sure to measure everything I eat, not just eyeball it and that was really about it. He didn't comment on the weight loss amount at all.

As long as you're doing everything you can to follow the program and do what you're supposed to do, I wouldn't worry about the exact number even if you're worried about what your doctor will say. I think a lot of times, they don't realize how much impact what they say and how they say it can have on their patients and how much damage it can inflict on their patients' psyches.

Stay focused on doing the right things and the weight loss should follow.

p.s. I'm not a doctor and have no idea where you started, but 40 lbs in 2 months seems like a lot! I know we hear magical stories of massive losses at the beginning, but from some of the posts from doctors I've seen don't estimate that high. I've seen anywhere from 15-30 the first month and 8-12 in subsequent months. That puts 40 at the high end.

I'm thinking about skipping my 3 month doctor appointment for this reason. I'm at 12 weeks post and I've only lost 22 pounds since surgery. I don't need them to remind me of how big of a failure that I am.

I know how you feel but that's exactly the wrong thing to do IMO. Let them give you some guidance and insist that something has to change with their plan. They have some culpability in this journey too- don't beat yourself up!

I really think its awful that a doctor or nut would make anyone feel that way after all, you just took the biggest and main step into your journey and towards your future goal. Dont let anyone distract or discourage you. Your body will go at its own pace. Drinking lots of Water and getting your Protein in will aid to losing more lbs.

Skipping appointments is never advisable. Don't worry . go with a food diary.

If it were me
I'd prefer to be told so I can just check I'm staying on track
Its easy for little treats to sneek in. So it would help me stay on track. I know they are there to help
My surgeon doesn't mention weight. I see him 6 weeks then next 6 month's. My nurse and dietician at 12 weeks
Keep going you got this. Dont feel discouraged. If your sticking to the plan . getting enough fluid's. Keep on as you are. Some lose faster some slower but we all get there.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
