Pre surgery conditioning

Recommended Posts

So, what can we do to prepare in general to help us have an easier recovery? I only have 10 days, but every little bit helps. My bmi is 33.3 and I only have to do 3-4 shakes and a lean/green Protein meal per day till surgery.

I'm trying to do some deep breathing exercises and some flutter kicks for a little bit of a strength in my abs.

I've read about pre surgery drinks like Clear fast, or carb loading the night before. Would these still be useful if you have to stop drinking at midnite?

Any other idea's?

What? You can't carb load the night before, what carbs? Your stomach needs to be empty. Most people are on clear noncaloric liquids the 3 days just prior to surgery.

This isn't a contest, I embrace your enthusiasm. Surgery is still surgery and cutting a major organ and getting anesthesia requires standard recovery methods and trying to do ab exercises will have little effect on outcome.

I wish you well though.

I'm not talking about binging on potato chips the night before. I'm talking about anesthesiologist approved pre surgery nutrition that is used by many physicians.

Ensure® Pre-Surgery

Clear Nutrition Drink

ENSURE PRE-SURGERY is specially designed to help reduce insulin resistance after surgery and improve patient outcomes. Designed to be consumed up to 2 hours before surgery. Use under medical supervision. For oral use.

  • #1 Doctor recommended brand.
  • Contains 50 g complex carbohydrate (maltodextrin) and is low in osmolality, unlike sports drinks.< sup>1
  • Meets ERAS guidelines for pre-surgery use of a clear carbohydrate beverage.2,3
  • Meets American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA®) guidelines for use with preoperative fasting.4

That may be fine for other types of surgery, but the point of the preop diet is to shrink the liver (low carb is the way to do this since the liver stores the carbs).

They also want the stomach (and intestines for a bypass) completely empty.

Follow your preop dietary instructions to the letter. Your surgeon has your best interest in mind.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
