Pre-Op weight loss, how much is to much?

Recommended Posts

I don't see the surgeon for the first time until late February of 2018. I want to lose some weight before that but i'm also afraid of losing to much!

I am being weighed at the classes I am attending so they know my starting weight.

Right now my BMI is over 40 and I am afraid if it drops below that I won't qualify. I still plan on controlling my diet no matter what to keep my A1c good.

What was y'alls experience with this? It is just something i've been worried about.

Thanks!

I'd say check with your insurance company to verify their BMI requirements.

My insurance coverage required a BMI of 35 with a co-morbidity to approve. If was 40 or higher I didn't need the co-morbidity.

I think insurance company is good, but it may also be good to go through your doctors office. If they need to modify things, it will have to be on their end. Not worth it to be the middle man between your doctor and the insurance company. Also great to get things in writing if possible so there's no run around in the future.

I had a year long diet and counseling session. I got to 40.1 and they stopped testing me. I was about a month away and the consensus was, if you do this well, you'll really work hard to make it a success.

Unfortunately an egotistic surgeon and my rare diseases kinda socked that but hey life could be worse. I'm smarter, wiser, and stronger. Live and learn.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
