How to Get All Fluids In?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My understanding is that water/fluid goal is 64oz/day, and that in the beginning fluids should be taken in 1oz increments every 15 minutes. That's 16 hours of drinking every 15 minutes without fail. I'm barely awake 16 hours a day. How is this possible? Am I missing something?

The first 5 days were really tough for me. I just did my best and I spent 24 hours in the hospital where they had me on IV fluids which helped "tank me up". I think I was in the 50 ounces range for those days. Now I can drink 4-8 ounces of Clear Liquids in an hour (I'm 3 weeks out) . I just started pureed foods and only was able to get in a few bites before feeling full. I know I will still need to get a good amount of Protein in through liquids for now as even 1/4 cup of refried Beans wasn't doable.

My first few days post op I didn't really measure the volume. I just took a sip every time I looked at the cup. I don't see any need to stress out about the 64 oz rule, as long as you are sipping and peeing the first 2-3 days.

Now that I am further out I am constantly drinking something. My Fluid intake is closer to 90oz a day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
