Hey all....I will be having gastric sleeve on August 9. I haven't asked my surgeon yet but I will on Tuesday. Are there any restrictions on driving after discharge from the hospital. Someone is driving me home after discharge, but after that....anyone experienced driving restrictions?

I was told no driving for 1 week. It's because of the narcotic pain meds. My one week will be tomorrow but I have to drive a short distance today.

I didn't have a driving restriction at all...

Mine was a same-day procedure. I had surgery that morning and drove myself home 45 miles on the interstate late that night after discharging from the hospital.

So, it depends. Ask your surgeon. In addition, assess how you feel.

I was 67 4 years ago, Inwas in the hospital 8 hours and drove to the grocery the next day and shopped. About 2 days later I drove 20 miles to a mall and walked the mall slowly. I felt great!!!!

I was just told no driving while in pain meds. I drove less than a week afterward- maybe 4 days. I didn't need a lot of pin meds.

I was told 10 days for driving. I couldn't have driven before about 5 days (I was in quite a lot of pain and couldn't have done an emergency stop properly) but would have been fine after that.

I tried driving about a week after surgery and was glad I only drove about a mile. My reflexes felt all off. I waited about another three days before I drove again and was fine.

I had one pain pill when I left the hospital after 8 hours, so driving wasn't an issue, no pain and a clear head. I wish everyone had as easy a time as I did.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
