16 weeks Post Op and need help

Recommended Posts

Okay so I am 16 weeks Post Op and feel like I eat nothing. Everything sits funny except for cheese and shredded chicken. But every 2 weeks or so I go through a few days where anything and everything hurts. Drinking Water (flavored because plain water hurts) even feels like I have swallowed something wrong. It lasts about a day and a half then goes away. Kinda feels like morning sickness in a sense (Not pregnant I have done tests)

I can't drink Protein Drinks. I know I am not getting enough protein... can anyone offer any advise as to what I can do? Or if this uppity tummy is normal and will pass?

It is really important to keep a journal of what you are actually consuming. That way you can take it to your doc and say.. hey, look! I'm only eating 200 calories a day! Maybe you already are, but if you only have the info you just gave, it's not enough. Measure (weigh) everything, and write down what, how much, what time, how you felt... everything.

You should be pretty comfortable consuming at least 800 calories a day of food. It sounds like you might not be getting that much. This is something you should bring up with your surgeon, because strictures can happen, and it will make you unable to eat or drink enough. The idea of Water hurting for a day and a half.. this sounds all wrong to me. If I take too big a swallow, it'll hurt for a few seconds, or maybe a minute. Not a day!

No the pain passes but then I have another sip and it's uneasy again. It's not constant pain. I see my surgeon next week and will for sure bring that up with him.

I am eating about 750 to 800 calories on good days. Some days a bit less but I try to get at least 750 in.

I'm trying to figure out if it's normal to have your stomach be uppity randomly one day here and there then go back to 'normal'

At four months out you should not be having any pain. Could you be eating too big of bites and not chewing enough? Most importantly, you need to see your surgeon so he can investigate - it shouldn't hurt. I am at 5 1/2 months out and usually only get about 850 calories in. I have to eat 6 meals to be able to get that much in. I can only tolerate 2-3 ounces at a time. Things I have found that work for me to get in extra Protein are: lattes (Fairlife milk-has extra protein); yogurt, and chicken. I can't eat beef or eggs, yet. Also, I cut a Quest Protein Bar (chocolate chip cookie dough) into six slices, smash them down, and bake them. They are extremely crunchy and I usually eat 1/2 a bar a day. I know I will have to discontinue this habit soon, but it helps me get the extra protein and calories in.

You need to see your surgeon ASAP you also should write down everything you eat and feel. I am almost ten months out and never went beyond liquids and soft food. After my surgeon dodged my calls for two months I finally got in and he told me it was my body not him. I then was told to see my dr. Went to my GI and he ran upper gi series where I was seen to have two strictures. Every time I tried to eat it would sit there and then I would get his thick slime like saliva coming up. My dr went on to dilate the strictures and found I had a twisted sleeve. It literally took on a cork screw formation with 6 twists. She opened it and it felt much better but twists up again. From January to May I went trough these dilations. I finally got I. With my surgeon again and we decided to put a stent. My body rejected the stent and a lot of damage was caused. My surgeon sugggested another stent. Finally I got wide enough to go get second and third opinions and was told there is so much damage to my esophagus and will most likely have to bypass. Please do not let your surgeon blow this issue off like I did. If your body doesn't feel right you need the help to fix it. Bring your food journals so you can show them what you eat. Good luck!

Are you making sure to cut food in to v small pieces? I was having similar pain (surgery 6/12) & realized I was eating too fast, although much slower than my normal speed. My practice said to eat that 2oz over half an hour!!

Please go see your doctor. I'm 3 months post op and haven't experience me those feelings. I've had a little bit of "sticking" if I ate too quickly but protein drinks and water shouldn't cause that feeling, unless you're chugging it. The only time water has been uncomfortable is if I drink too soon after eating without realizing it. Better safe then sorry but it may be possible you have a stricture. If not they should be able to work with you to see what can help alleviate the discomfort.

As everyone else said (and your planning) for to the dr. I'm close to the same time as you and I was having pain. It could be several things but better safe than sorry. I ended up having another surgery but it could have been worse if I didn't get it checked out.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
