Anyone read Carnie Wilson's book... or any good book suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone read Carnie Wilson's "Gut Feelings" book? I thought that during this 6 month supervised diet, that I would try to find some books that encourage eating when hungry.. help you realize the relationship you have with food... etc. I have seen wonderful results from the banding and I can't wait to have it.... but i do understand that if your heads not in it, it can't work. Like one doctor told us, you can get a gallon of ice cream through the band ... a little at a time. I just want to be as mentally ready as I can be! Any suggestions?

If you're at all interested in getting banded you must read "Fighting Weight" by Khalia Ali (Mohammad Ali's daughter). It was an awesome, detailed account of her life and Lap Band journey. I have also read Carnie Wilson's book.

I second Ali's book...My husband met her on Tuesday and said she is inspirational...I finished half of the book so far and have been rather impressed.

Best of luck!

I read three books before surgery:

Fighting Weight by Khaliah Ali

Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies

Lap Band for Life by Dr. Ariel Ortiz

All were (and still are) a wealth of information. I particularly like the Dummies book. Very to-the-point.

I too did not know that Carnie Wilson has a book out. I will definitely look for it!

I found Khaliah Ali's book to be very inspiring. It was the one of the things that helped me make up my mind to go forward. BTW - She looks GREAT!

Jackie Guerra's book Under Construction is AWESOME ! . She is awesome. Plus the proceeds of the book to to help fund WLS for people who can not afford it.

She did have RNY but her book is very funny , emotional and motivational.

I was looking for books to read in the library and picked up a book written by Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz (recognized the names because they are on Oprah's show). The book is called You, On A Diet: The Owners Manual to Waist Management. I thought it would be just another diet book, but it's not. I'm only about a third of the way thru the book, but so far it's been an eye opener. It explains the body's response to food and how the body works to process food. It's easy to read and great comic illustrations to explain things - not at all like a science manual. For me, it helps to have a visual of exactly what happens to the food and how it affects the body - and make me think twice before I make a bad food choice. I've enjoyed the book, maybe someone else will too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
