LeLe3 0 Posted July 30, 2017 I have osteoarthritis in my lumbar spine and three bulging discs. My surgeon said I could get back on my Celebrex six weeks post–op!
Diana_in_Philly 1,426 Posted July 30, 2017 I have bone-on-bone osteoarthritis in my knees. Both of them. As in, they need to be replaced. That being said, about 4 weeks prior to surgery I was switched from a prescription version of Naproxyn to meloxicam, which is a Cox-2 inhibitor and not considered an NSAID. My bariatric surgeon and my orthopedic surgeon agreed this would work. I've been on it since with no problems. Before surgery my pain level in my knees was so bad that I was good for 1-2 Vicodin a day. I can count on one hand the number of Vicodin I've taken since surgery. You back will thank you. But Celebrex and Meloxicam/Mobic are in the same class of Cox-2s which give similar relief to NSAIDs but are in a different chemical category completely. 1 CraftyScientist reacted to this
Tth1974 3 Posted July 30, 2017 Hi. I was told in the beginning to not use NSAID. When I returned for my 6 month appointment, I asked if this was a lifetime rule...no NSAID. I was told we could take them, just try to not take them on a regular basis. I am probably a senior on this site lol I had surgery 3 1/2 years ago, and I now take them as needed and have never had any problems at all. I would absolutely jot let this Detour having this surgery! I have been able to keep off about 60 pounds for 3 1/2 years, so for me it was so worth it! I hope this helps[emoji4]
clk 3,519 Posted July 31, 2017 I was told no NSAIDs was for bypass, not sleeve. I have arthritis and take naproxen as needed. I'd rather not, because I'd rather not have arthritis. But I've had no issues and it's doc approved. It seems to be a matter of opinion with doctors on this one. Cheri
CraftyScientist 6 Posted August 1, 2017 My surgeon said that the band would have been the better option for me, given the amount of weight I needed to lose (224 day of surgery, I'm 5'2"), but I've got severe osteoarthritis in both of my knees and take a medication called Meloxicam to combat the inflammation. It doesn't directly help with pain, so I take Tramadol and the occasional Norco when it's really bad. I need a knee replacement, so he said the sleeve would be best since the Meloxicam is known to cause ulcers in a "normal" stomach, and if I had a banded stomach, I'd get an ulcer for sure. I had my sleeve on 9/26/16 and wasn't allowed to get back on it until February. I haven't had any issues with it, but I can't take any NSAID medications because of it. I wouldn't recommend seeking out a doc who will tell you what you want to hear, but I'd definitely see your rheumatologist to feel out your options. Good luck! Maggie1955 158 Posted August 2, 2017 I also have that concern. When I had my consultation with the surgeon, I specifically asked him about that because I have rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and fibromyalgia. I used to be on NSAID's every day, but my kidney function was not good, so I went off the NSAID's. Now I only take them once in awhile and try to rely more on my tens unit (I use the iTens unit that works from a phone app - I can honestly say that it helps me deal with the pain). In any case, my surgeon said that once I was on solid food, he had no concerns with me taking an occasional NSAID; he just didn't want me taking them constantly. I can live with that.
