Hello and thank you all in advance for any advice you may be able to give. I have been overweight most of my adult life and I come from a family that suffers from obesity, diabetes and hypertension. I currently have a bmi of 34 and although I do not suffer from hypertension or diabetes I have very flat feet and find that I am having trouble walking. I am in constant pain from my knees and I feel this is a wake up call to finally make a drastic change. I've tried every method known to man to lose weight and while I can lose about 10-15 pounds I never seem to get to my ultimate goal without gaining the weight back. Due to cost and budget I am looking to go to Mexico for the surgery. I am very afraid of going there for surgery and really need help/advice on a surgeon that will do a good job. I'd really like to go somewhere that I can get to from San Diego as the price from Nebraska to San Diego is less expensive. I am hoping to get the surgery done soon (Aug 10th) because I have the time available from work. Please help if you can.

Thank you all

I'll be going to Mexico as soon as I have money saved. I had close friends go through the weight loss agents. Both with very amazing results. Searching for that group on this website and YouTube you may get scared away. Another person I personally know went through ALM paid $2500 more and did not have as great of experience or results. You will see lots of great posts about BariatricPal Team MX and Dr Illian the price is reasonable and great reviews.
If you search YouTube you will see quite a few videos with Dr Ortiz all happy patients.
Those are the three I am considering because they pick you up from San Diego airport and drive you over the border. Personally I am having a hard time between Weightloss agents who my two friends went to or Dr Illian because he only does a few surgeries a day.

The Level of Care far Surpasses anything I have ever received in the States. The Oasis of Hope Hospital is Extremely Clean and very Spacious. The Pricing with BariatricPal and Dr. Illan was very Reasonable even by Mexican Standards. Bill and Stacey and the whole Crew made this more like a Vacation than a Surgery. In fact I liked it so much I will be going as a friends Companion on September 21st. The only thing you have to Lose is Weight.

Thank you guys so much for all the help. I'm going to check out both of the options for pricing. I am also having trouble finding a friend able to go with me. Do you think with both those options I would be ok to go alone?

So many people go alone. Also, when you get your date you could ask if anyone is going when you are. I readnof a couple people who met up there through here. Granted you're both patients but you'd have someone to commiserate with.

Thank you Joann454 that is actually a good idea. :)

Does anyone else have advice about doctors? I contacted the Oasis but they are booked until September. Great sign the place is so busy but it would not allow me to have the procedure during the time I need. I'm growing a little desperate and stressed and hopeless so any further advice is very much appreciated.

I had surgery with Dr. Ramos Kelly in Tijuana and had an awesome experience. His credentials are impeccable and his staff was great. I traveled alone, was picked up in San Diego, and recovered at a wonderful hotel after being discharged from Hospitale Angeles. I also met a couple of his other patients that were down there for surgery at the same time. I highly recommend him.

Would you like me to put you down as the person who referred me to the hospital in the questionnaire?

Sure that would be Great. I am looking forward to your Success Stories and Pics. Now Pretend that you have already went and slowly start eating the type of foods that you will Post Op and as you go the Quantity will decrease as well so by the time you have Surgery you will be adapted to the Sleeve Lifestyle.

One friend went by herself and did fine. I have read so many stories of people going alone and end up spending time with others having surgery the same day that they never felt alone. My husband wants to go but I explained that it would be less expensive if I went alone (plane tickets, cost of food etc). I really didn't want to be worried about him being bored and knew that him going with me would cause me more stress than me going alone and only having to worry about me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
