Lap band removal- horrendous pain

Recommended Posts

I was banded in Jan 2013. 2 weeks ago after feeling like I was having a heart attack, not holding food or liquids down and drowning in my sleep I made a trip to the ER to find out the band had slipped again for the 3rd time. So...... after 2 slips and a host of other problems in 4 years my doctor decided it was time to remove it. Having a full time stressful job I tried to plan ahead and asked the Dr for a note and to fill out FMLA paperwork for my job. He would only give me 1 week off. Smh! Anyway, I had the surgery this morning and this is by far the worst pain I have every experienced. 3 babies, 5 abdominal surgeries, ankle surgery and wrist surgery and this pain surpasses all! Even the pain meds hey gave me intravenously did not work. Now I'm home in bed crying because the pain is so bad!

Has anyone else experienced this.

Btw: he said my band had eroded into my liver and he had to cut it away from the liver. The band had also eroded into my stomach as well.

I had my band removed on July 25th I have some pain in the main site of where my band was but other than that I've done pretty good I was scared that he told me if it attached to my stomach he would have to give me the sleeve automatically

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
