Antisocial before surgery...life afterwards?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

So I have a job that forces me into extreme social situations and I'm a musician who spends a ton of time on stage with people staring at me. But all my life, being a big dude, I've never enjoyed the spot light. I know I'm introverted naturally. I know I don't need more than a couple people in my inner circle and then the rest I can keep at arms length. But I've always hated small talk and whatever. People frustrate me naturally.. and thats more a "me" issue...

I also know that I don't go out because I don't feel comfortable in my own skin. I'm currently 50lbs down from my max capacity. Which is awesome, and I know I'll be getting more adventurous as my wife wants and craves social interactions. So I'm excited for that for not only me but for her.

But I'm curious on your antisocial behaviors and how the surgery has helped.

Thanks

I just got my sleeve last Saturday but I can tell you, years ago I was extremely social when I was thin, but once I gained the weight I became a hermit . I stopped seeing my friends, stopped going out, became a recluse, broke up with my bf who i loved, and just went out for work. I know once I lose my weight and am thin again I will be very social. I cannot wait. Unfortunately, my entire self worth is tied to my weight which is something I have to work on because I know heavy ppl that have full and wonderful lives. I was just raised that you must be thin or your not worth anything so for me, its a huge issue.

Meh. I still don't like most people. 😒 The older I get, the more I know.

I'm more outgoing now, I don't get the "OMG FAT FREAK" glares in public, or the comments and random abuse I used to. I don't sweat after a flight or 3 of stairs. I fit 'normal' looking clothes. I blend in.

I'm starting to feel comfortable in my skin, whereas before I'd just be angry at the world. I'm generally happier all-round. I'm still a bit anti social when it comes to events that revolve around food, mainly due to the food lust. That's about the only social interaction I avoid these days.

I was definitely Anti Social prior to surgery for the 6 months. I didn't go out barely ever except functions for friends and family.

Now I am only 4 days post op but consistently dropping weight and looking forward to being more agile. I never felt comfortable at my high weight and was definitely embarrassed of myself and for letting myself get that big. I also noticed in just a ~30lb weight change how strangers respond to you in a more positive direction.

I am just focusing all my effort towards maximizing my surgery and bettering my life for the long term and being less worried about others. Also this process definitely points out people who really care about people and maybe friendships or family members you may become closer with after this surgery.

@Kyle Lukas Great insight. Yea, I haven't told too many people yet. And those who know are inner circle type people who I know have my back for life... Ride or die types. The relationships/friendships thing will be interesting to walk through, so I've heard.

Ummm. Some of us are still not so social... for many reasons ... weight can just be one of lots of things that keep some from being social butterflies
Age.... widowhood...family...
Many factors
Youth is a wonderful thing and I believe wls really can improve your outlook early

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
