Old veteran, getting back on track

Recommended Posts

I have been absent a long time. I got a sleeve in 2012.. It went great and before the next year I went from 340 to 225.

I did well for quite a while but began regressing to old habits a little at a time. I am now at 260 and I am determined to get back.

My moment of realization came when I was walking into the grocery store and saw this fat guy coming at me in the reflection on the door.

I am back on medications that I had shed before and have much less energy.

The downward spiral ends now.

i used to be a moderator here and gave many people advice. Now I need to take it myself.

I will get back!

Good for you for seeing this before it was out of hand. I haven't had my surgery yet to give you any pointers, but if you were a moderator, I'm sure you helped a lot of newbies. Just make yourself a newbie, and don't be afraid to listen to yourself or other vets. Sounds to me like you've been a strong person. You've got this.

Glad to hear you're turning it around. Unfortunately, some people get off the track and don't get back on. I have had a lapland, but had to have it removed. I am only 15 lbs aways from goal. Somehow, this sleeve does not really feel restricting at all. Of course, I am still on Protein Shakes and some soft purred food.

Good luck and great for you that you are stopping sooner then later.

4 pounds down, 38 to go. I hate the feeling of giggling fat on my chest when I walk or run. Eviction notice has been served! 👍😀

I'm a vet too. almost 4 years out, and totally off track. I can't believe that I am one of those statistics, and I REFUSE to be a statistic. I'm NOT a failure, I'm simply derailed big time.

I agree with Kathy, a huge factor is that we take time to come here, post and keep up with each other.

I too have regained a lot of my original loss, but we get a new start every day, and tomorrow is my focus. I'm excited that I found a new support group to attend this week. I think it will really help. I'm going to be doing a true reset by utilizing the plan of my original surgeon. 4-5 shakes a day, sugar free yogurt, pudding, Jello. broth, and one meal a day (pick either Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, shakes replace the rest). This is pretty much his pre-op plan and it will work. Compared to what I'm eating now, this is very little.

I'm still aware of SOME restriction but I think I have done a doozie of a job on my sleeve and stretched it. over time, I am eating WAY too much and have been drinking soda for over a year so i'm sure there is stretch. Also tomorrow going to focus on getting OFF the soda and going back to coffee, tea, Water, etc.

I think the stretch of a gastric sleeve is different from the stretch of a gastric bypass. The part left on the sleeve is the muscular part, the gastric bypass, it is bypassed. So the stretch of a sleeve is not as easy as a gastric bypass which is just stomach tissue. I could be wrong but this is what I understand.

Muscles can stretch but they can also shorten. If you and I quit abusing our stomach I believe it will shrink and give us more restriction. I am already feeling different, I am paying attention more. I ate yesterday in dead silence, no TV on, something I haven't done in a while. It was amazing how soon the full signal showed up. Saving the rest for later is a good thing, that's why tupperware was invented...😀

I had my sleeve surgery in October 2014. I went from 215 to 169. I am now up to 198. I would like to lose that 65% at least which is 151. My goal weight is 135 pounds. I am just praying I can stay on track. What an emotional journey! I am back on shakes and One meal a day.

How long did your surgeon tell you to be on the 4-5 shakes a day, sf yogurt, pudding, Jello, broth and one meal a day of your choice.
I too am trying to get back on track from gaining 50 pounds. I am going to try this starting today. Also I am going back to 800 calories a day. Thanks

I was never told to be on 4-5 shakes a day. I had a terrible dietician from the very beginning almost 3 years ago. I needed to have been in a group to help me stay on track. I need to be monitored while I do this! I honestly am getting a complex! Why can't I succeed in something I want desperately! I have a medical condition. I have MS so I use a walker or cane most of the time! Let's buddy up on this journey! I'm in Texas. My name is Ginny...

That was my pre op diet and I did it for only a few weeks to shrink my liver. The point this time is to get my restriction back.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
