Why do people recommend Gas-X post op?

Recommended Posts

Can someone explain to me why there is so much talk of Gas-X post op?

Am I missing something here? I thought the gas pain was from the CO pumped into the abdominal cavity during surgery which has nothing to with gas in the GI tract.

Is this a myth/misinformation that we tolerate on these boards or is there an actual basis for taking Gas-X post-operatively that I am clueless about?

Can someone please explain this (and I mean the medical basis, not something that was read on the internet)

I assumed it was misinformation that continues to circulate.

Possibly also that people "swear" it worked for them... placebo?

My issue was that after every time I swallowed anything I'd get an instant gas pain in my stomach and it was very uncomfortable and this was even a week after surgery. But I would take gas X to help relieve that feeling after I ate

The same reason people think muscle weighs more than fat, they are idiots.

Gas-X doesn't help with the CO2 gas, you have to walk for that. If you have actual in your stomach gas it may help. I took it once.

Yeah, you can add Gas-x to the list of things I bought pre-op that were a waste of money. :)

I think it supports people to be related to reality. But, as we used to say back on the internet back in the day, YMMV.

while it doesn't help with the post op gas some people do have gas pains once they begin passing gas and it can help for that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
