Anyone have kids under 5 AND the lapband?

Recommended Posts

I have two kids, ages 4 and 1 1/2 and I am curious how I will manage with their needs fter surgury. I am a stay at home mom. The youngest can get in and out of his high chair and his big sister is a big help. I can get on teh floor to change dipes and hold him but I still have some concerns. My husband is an offshore diver and is gone a lot and oncall 24/7. I am curious if others have the same things they have to deal with.

I am a SAHM too, with a 9mo old. She was 7mo when I got my band. She is very active and when she is held she wants to climb all over and wrestle. I had no problems. Even just after the surgery. I had no down time at all. It was like I had never had it. I did experience pain where my port was, it was like strained muscle tenderness more than anything. But, I had a c-section and it was nothing compared to that. I think you will do fine. I guess since your little one is past a year he/she is out of an infant car seat? If not I would suggest leaving it in the car and just toating him/her to and from it. That worked better on me since that infant car seat makes her about 5-7lbs heavier. Best of luck to you!!!

I'm also a SAHM ... my youngest are 4 & 2. I came home from MX the day after my surgery and immediately returned to my normal "duties" ... I didn't have to do any lifting as they both insist on being independant and doing things on their own, I did pick up my 2 year old once without thinking but it didn't cause any problems. As far as diaper changes, it might be easier to get up & down if you changed them on a bed instead of on the floor ... just a thought! Good luck! :biggrin1:

I had nearly-2-yo twins and a 4 yo when I was banded and went back to mommy status the day after surgery. I had them nap on the floor since they were still in cribs, and I changed dipes on the couch since they could climb up on it. My husband would put them into their cribs at night and then take them out in the morning before he left for work. We did not go anywhere in the car for the first 4-5 days but after that, I really didn't have any problem. I remember watching lots of movies the first couple of days but back to normal activities by day 3 or 4.

Seems like i have been worrying for nothing. I hope to have help the first couple of days and the most I should have to pick up the 1 1/2 year old is to put him in his pack n play (whre he sleeps). I was hoping I would be back to normal after 4 days or so. I live on the second floor apartment here and carrying groceries will be an issue but since I wont be eating that much (LOL) it will be easy to stock up for the kiddos!

I had a 4 1/2 year old... not a young one... but, I came home from the hospital, and resumed mommy duties. Although I didn't have an easy time with it... I was able to do it. For months before hand, I kept telling him not to climb on me... it helped.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
