Surgery Around the Holidays

Recommended Posts

Hi all:

I am a month out from my final weigh-in for my monitored diet and submitting to insurance for approval. I asked my PA last week if I would be getting surgery in early October like I had previously thought, and she said it's likely going to be happening in late October or even early to mid-November. On one hand, if I have surgery in mid-November than I will be on short-term disability through the holidays and will be able to spend time with my family, which is great. However, I'm concerned about having surgery so close to food-centered holidays - Thanksgiving and Christmas. Has anyone had surgery near these holidays and was it difficult to tolerate the holidays while recovering? I just realized I would still be on the liquid diet after surgery during Thanksgiving. That sucks. Ah well, it will be what it will be, I guess.

Thanks,

L

That might even be for the best, at least if your still in the liquid diet phase, you won't be tempted to try the holiday dinner.

Maybe you can flavor your liquids to mimic some of your holiday favorites, like chicken broth with a little poultry seasoning, or tea with some pumpkin spice? Just a thought... good luck!!

My tentative surgery date is November 6th, so I will still be on a liquid diet at Thanksgiving. I already told my husband that the kids and him can go eat my parents or his and I'll stay home. I don't want to deal with the stress. I'll just go shopping for deals instead lol

I'm a week out from surgery and think you would be ok. You don't have any desire to eat or drink anything, so it shouldn't bother you. You might even be able to make a holiday themed shake if you are really wanting to have something while the others are eating. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! I am not going to stress about it until I have my set surgery date. I also see this as a way to possibly get out of family time, which is stressful and not always fun in my family. I'm sure it will be fine, but I appreciate the feedback. :D

My surgery is scheduled for Sept 26th so I'll be two months out during thanksgiving. My family knows about my procedure so I'm not too worried about home celebrations. I don't think anybody would care if I opted out this year. However, I am worried about holiday potlucks and meals at work. They make a big deal about the entire department chipping in and coming together to eat. How have other people dealt with holiday food at work? I don't mind chipping in but I really don't want to sit in a conference room while 50 other people stuff their faces and I'll just be there nibbling on some turkey... I guess I can just try and slip out unnoticed lol

I had my surgery on 11/14/16, I was on the puréed stage at Thanksgiving. It wasn't a problem for me as I had no appetite at all. I just took my nutri bullet with me and weighed out my portions to equal 2-4 ounces. It bothered others more than it bothered me because they felt bad for eating regular food and larger amounts.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
