When does the gas go away? Really hurting...

Recommended Posts

I was banded 10/2 and initially had a lot of gas, as expected. It seems like it has moved from being in my chest and back to my left arm and shoulder. It REALLY hurts. I've been feeling great otherwise but this is really painful. When I take a deep breath I can feel it in my shoulder and into my neck. I tried to pick up a glass of Water with my left hand and I could barely hold up the glass. The only reason I can type with my left hand is because my arm and shoulder aren't moving, just my fingers. I've been using a heating pad at night and I took some Tylenol a few minutes ago to see if that would help. I've been off my pain meds since Friday and don't want to take them anymore.

Any other suggestions that might help??

I can't say for sure but it just gradually went away. But I will warn you, you will have more gas than normal post banding as I do now at 7 weeks post op. That's because I am eating healthier and more fibrous foods with tons of Water. Make sure you walk. That helped more than anything. Also try the Gas-X strips. It's 4 a.m. EST and I am up due to guess what? GAS and several Bathroom trips. My intestines seemed to be doing somersaults!!!! I do hope you feel better soon.

I was banded on 9-28 my shoulder pain was terrible. It is refered pain from the diaphragm so my sister (the doctor) said put the heating pad on my abdomen. Also I started taking Phasyme gas relief extra strength. I would take 2 at one time and it really helped. I am two weeks out now and it is gone. So hope any of this helps.

Hang in there! This seems to be a common problem. I'm slated for a band on 10/26, so I'm keenly interested in this. But a friend suggested that I do all that was suggested to you and it will go away. Don't lose heart! Did you try a hot bath? liquid Tylenol? I've read repeatedly that you must walk, walk, walk.....apparently it moves those gas molecules around and ...out! :Banane10:)

dont do the hot bath - baths are not allowed as they can impact your incisions....

I have the same issue with the gas although it is getting better every day

Well I am 12 days post-op and even though the gas IS better I still struggle with it. Now I only feel it in my left shoulder and in my neck. And it only seems to bother me at night... weird huh? But it IS better than it was so I have hope it will be gone completely soon!

The Heating Pad Became My Best Friend. I Actually Woke Up Crying And Sick From The Pain. Just Keep Walking And Keep The Heating Pad Close.

I still have the shoulder pain and it has been two and a half months. Nothing seems to help much. Wish it did, sometimes it is really bad. Donna

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
