Rice/pasta alternatives

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

I am looking for alternatives that have a similar mouth feel to rice and Pasta. Has anyone found anything amazing?

On another thread someone said they got a veggie spiralizer and made zucchini noodles. I just got mine form Amazon today and haven't tried it yet. I did go on Pinterest and put in spiralizer recipes and found tons that look really good. I would suggest that. Apparently you can spiralizer all kinds of veggies and make awesome low carb paleo meals that fit into the bariatric guidelines. I don't know about rice. I have completely avoided it so far until I can talk with my Dietitian about it.

My friend swears by cauliflower rice. You can make it, or buy it in a steamer bag in the frozen section. Seems to be a hot item nowadays.

I got mine the other day and will try it today or tomorrow. I'm excited about this! Go zoodles!

Otherwise I've heard of this thing called miracle noodles, but the reviews on Amazon are not good.

Overall I don't have the room for them, even at 2 years after eating my Protein. It isn't really worth it to make a side to only have one bite or 2.

Zucchini noodles work well and so does riced cauliflower.

Wow, just made some zoodles, in Tomato sauce. Absolutely outstanding. Scratched that Pasta itch!

I didn't blanche them for a minute as recommended, I sauteed them for a very short time in olive oil. That left them still a little tiny bit crunchy. I could have put some Protein powder in the sauce but I didn't, as I've already met my protein goals for the day.

This will be a big go-to for me in the future. High recommendation!

Pre-op I ate a lot of quinoa instead of rice, theres lots of good recipes out there. Natures own has a Protein wheat bread with 8g per slice, can't taste the difference. I've made the zucchini noodles several times, just be sure to squeeze out the moisture. Cauliflower mash or rice is good, I buy it pre-made in the freezer section. Steamfresh protein blends are good. Protein banana pancakes are pretty good made with Protein Powder or shakes. I've heard you can make Pizza Crust out of chicken or cauliflower, I'll have to try that out.

I have no room for carbs sadly, maybe one bite a few times a week. Most of what I eat is Protein.< br>

I was so excited when I found Birds Eye vegetable made Pasta in the frozen food veggie section. It is very tasty - high Protein, low carb - nice with some baked chicken!

I use cauliflower rice at least twice a week. Zucchini noodles work well in so many recipes and definitely fill the void for Pasta. I am getting to the point where I don't crave those foods anymore at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
