After Surgery Taste Issues

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had any issues with taste after surgery? I was sleeved on 7/11 and can't seem to tolerate Protein Drinks, Protein powders, artificial sweeteners, dairy. Everything tastes so sweet or milk tastes so sour. I've ordered a Protein Powder made from egg whites hopefully that will be better. Even Water doesn't taste very good. Hoping this is temporary. It has been a struggle getting my fluids in and I haven't met protein goals yet.

Yep, everyone's tastes change (and so far at 4 months postop, mine have stayed changed). I'm surprised milk tastes sour to you. You can try lactaid milk (might be too sweet, but worth a shot).. ok to drink, even if you aren't lactose intolerant. Fairlife milk also tastes different (and of course 2%, skim, and whole will all vary as well).

There are a zillion types of tea (especially herbal), hopefully some of those will go down ok. Camomile is usually pretty nice and soothing. Homemade broth might be good, and can get you some Protein in as well. (google "bone broth" for recipes.. but put meat in too, as it will add more protein to the broth.)

For the next couple months, everything will be an experiment to see what you can tolerate. Tiny changes in type or brand can make a big difference.

Yep, I've had changed tastes too. I don't like ice cream as much as I did preop (which is a huge plus), but I also don't like my Protein Shakes. I loved the Premier Protein vanilla and caramel shakes preop, but now they are way too sweet and I have to choke them down. I still have some left from when I purchased a whole bunch preop. I'm still ok with the chocolate flavor.

I also have to add flavor infusers to Water and can't drink it plain without gagging. I used to chug plain room temp water preop. Now It's gotta be cold and flavored.

I was sleeved the same day as you, and am having the exact same issue. The taste even wakes me up at night! It's gross. Just on Protein Shakes and Water. In desperation I took a tiny bite of some dentyne hoping the strong minty taste would help which it did.

My tastes never changed at all.

I did however get really sick of having sweet stuff all the time, because I wasn't living on sweets before surgery, the idea of living on sweet stuff all day post-op was just stupid to me.

I did a lot of broth with unflavored Protein Powder.

I still like all of them just as much (which is good since I bought WAY too much for pre-op) but where chocolate was my least favorite pre-op, it is now my most favorite.

(PS- don't throw these shakes away if you can't drink them anymore, send them my way!)

@gwbicsterThat's exactly what happened to me as well. chocolate was my least favorite preop, now it's my favorite flavor post op. I'm definitely still drinking my shakes - I'm too cheap to throw them away :)

Yup! Artificial sweeteners taste horrible now and real sugar taste better. Premier Protein tasted like crap but muscle milk taste great, weird.

I was sleeved on the 7th of July and am going thru the same issues. Anything sugar free tasting is making me nauseous. Forget about the Protein Drinks too because I can't even choke them down right now. broth and Tomato Soup is the only thing that is soothing.

I have, it works fine. Watch the sugar, though.

I can't stand eggs anymore. I just do not like the taste or smell. Sometimes cheese or coffee tastes like vomit, perhaps it reminds me of acid reflux, I don't know. It is pretty strange. Otherwise everything is normal.

Since ditching refined sugar over 12 months ago, I'm repulsed by the taste if/when I have it inadvertently, whether in a meal at a restaurant that has a sauce laced with it, or if the barista gets my coffee order wrong and puts a sugar in it. It disgusts me.

The thing is, this gross taste is coming from my system. I'm not talking about food preferences....

Hi. I was sleeved on June 14, and I have the SAME issue. Pre-op, I LOVED my Protein Shakes, now, I can't stand them! I tried a meatball, I used to love them...not the same. I can only drink water if it has tons of ice in it! And even then, it doesn't always taste "right". I hope this passes with time. I have switched to Fairlife milk, thats really good, and extra protein.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
