One week post op: Diarrhea

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I'm one week post op. I realize that isn't that long and so this is all likely normal, but I'm nervous and started to go crazy worrying if it's not.

I did fine in the hospital, but ever since I've been home I've had diarrhea. I wake up with it and a stomach ache every morning. It will hit me out of no where when I have or haven't eaten. And almost everything I eat makes me sick.

I've backed off all milk products for the past 3 days and I thought that helped, but I still feel terrible and I'm scared to eat, because I'm scared to make myself feel worse. I'm getting about half my Water in, and all of my Vitamins.

How long does this usually last? Is it normal? Should I be concerned?

Thank you so much.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

After surgery, I became lactose intolerant. This generally caused diarrhea. Once I was off the lactose, this problem disappeared. Since your episodes did not occur within minutes of eating/drinking, I do not believe you are experiencing the same problem. Beware some Protein Shakes contain lactose.

I think what might be the cause in your case is a lack of good bacteria in you intestines. Normally after surgery, you are treated with antibiotics. This kills not only the bad bacteria but also the good bacteria in your gut. It is important to reestablish these colonies of good bacteria after you get off the antibiotics. Generally this is done by taking Probiotics. So if you haven't done this yet, pick some up at the drug store and try this approach.

You could also add some yogurt or kefir (yogurt-like beverage but with even more probiotics) to a smoothie!

Yeah kefir a great alternative cause you don't have to have another tablet to chew or try to swallow. And even people who are lactose intolerant normally can have it.

You're still very early says concentrate more on the Protein Shakes to help with your healing....food will come.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
