How did WLS change your life?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is on Monday, July 17th and it's starting to dawn on me that this is actually happening. I'm starting to get cold feet (which i'm sure is normal!) so for all you that have went through this process: how has weight loss surgery changed your life?

And I don't see many of those people here. I wish some more veterans would stick around.

I have lost the equivalent of a fully grown man since my surgery 20 months ago.

  • My waist size does NOT begin with a 5 OR a 4
  • My scale is no longer an Industrial Version that can show 400+ pounds
  • I am NO LONGER a Diabetic
  • Walking is something that simply happens, not a carefully thought out plan
  • I can buy my clothes at Old Navy instead of a Big & Tall shop
  • I can play Golf again
  • My daughter said "I got my Dad back"

More confidence, no more sleep apneas, loads of energy and finding out I actually love hiking, walking, swimming. I can buy normal clothes and not gigantic absurd parachutes, I can see my feet...

No more sweating a ton every time I take the stairs, no more grossed out looks in public transportation, more attention and respect from strangers (that's sad in a way but well).

The list could go on for hours. Just hold on for the first weeks are not easy, but it's all worth it, I've been out since February 2016 and my weight stabilized over 5months ago, and I feel great physically (except for the bit of excess belly skin, but it's nothing compared to obesity).

Sleeved on April 20, 2017 and I wouldn't take it back for anything! I had seriously cold feet and even considered backing out the morning of surgery.
Thankful I didn't because I'm now down 84lbs since my highest weight. My favorite moments so far:

I no longer need to shop in plus sizes
I actually fit in one of those tiny swings at an amusement park!
My chronic ankle pain is no longer a daily issue
No more CPAP machine
Lowered my blood pressure meds
I don't feel as anxious about being in public
Ultimately surgery has made me feel so much more hopeful about my future and it's been a long time since I've felt that way.
:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
