Does anyone know why my nose runs when my sleeve is near full? So weird!

Recommended Posts

Any nurses out there or someone who might know? When I'm eating and my sleeve is just about full, my nose starts to run. I'm not the only person to report this as I've seen many people on here comment about it. It seems so weird to me (although it is a helpful indicator I do confess). All the times I ate past satiety with my natural stomach I never ever experienced this.

I'm just curious what the metaphysical explanation for this might be? Why does it happen? And why does it only happen after surgery?

I'm not a nurse but I know it has something to do with the vagus nerve. I think we put pressure on it and stimulate it when our sleeve is overfilled, or something like that.

I can only imagine having it damaged during surgery would be miserable. That feeling during those minutes of "overfull" is not one I'd want my body experiencing full-time, or part-time, even.

Sorry I can't be scientific.

Running nose is typically a sign that I'm eating too quickly or ate too much at once. Preop it was a sign of reflux for me.

I've also seen other people on the boards here reporting a runny nose.

Why the time your nose is running you have already over ate.

No that's not always the case. This morning it was running at the first bite.

Our bodies are crazy things. lol! You probably won't have an answer, it's just something your body does right now. It took me about 3 months before all the alien type reactions or events/sensations started to dissipate. I used to get the hiccups even if I just ate 3 small bites. When I called my surgeon's office they swore it was because I was over-eating and needed to do Portion Control. Through tears and anger I told her, So waking up and sipping 2 small sips of Water means I'm over eating??? Good to know! lol! Anyway, it just is what it is. Keep a tissue by your side to prep and know that most likely this will go away quickly.

I had the foamies for 8 weeks as well. Was ALSO told it was because I was over eating. lol! AgaIn, hard to do when it was start with just one bite of food. lol!

I was told that your body is making mucus to lubricate the passage in preparation for you to vomit and some of it is making its way out of your nose. (Sorry for not having a better way to say it.) This happens to me every night when I eat, or attempt to eat, dinner.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
