Only a few days post op question about water

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 7/6/17 and after surgery and my leak test I was finally allowed to sip Water. It was taking me about 45 min to even sip 1oz of Fluid. Now here I am a few days later and I find myself able to sip around 5oz of water in an hour and still be thirsty. I am in no way chugging but I just drink it pretty considtantly and I feel fine.

I'm really lacking in my Protein just because it seems to make me

Thirstiest so I only get in maybe 3oz of it a day1. Tomorrow I'm going to be alternating 2oz of water and 1oz protein. I guess my question is should I be drinking so much liquid this early out? I see some people a few weeks out who aren't drinking that much and it makes me feel like I can stretch myself out. I'm following everything my surgeon says to a T and my weight loss is going good but I'm just

Worried about shooting myself in the foot early on.

Water (and most liquids) empties out of the pouch very quickly, almost immediately, and into your roux limb. so if you can drink without pain, go right ahead. if your roux limb is filled up with liquid and you keep drinking, you will then get a pain in your pouch. but that isn't a big deal either and you certainly aren't stretching anything out. it's just a signal to wait a few minutes for your new plumbing to clear out.

Thanks to both of you. I really was stressing it. I think it's so strange how different people end up on different ends of the spectrum of certain things. I'm glad I'm able to drink enough Water and don't have to worry about dehydration!

My hospital doesn't release you until you are able to get 34 oz in a day by yourself. I went home 2 days after surgery day.

No worries on the Water but you really need to work on upping your Protein.

I was told to sip, sip, sip water. Stop for 30 minutes, then drink Protein Shake, wait 30 minutes, then start sipping water again.

At first I could drink about 3 oz of the protein shake at a time. We were told to shoot for at least 40gms of protein a day that first two weeks.

I had my surgery on 7/6 as well and I'm miserable and rethinking the entire decision [emoji22]. I got discharged from the hospital yesterday. I can barely drink 32 oz of Water and I'm supposed to drink 64. Water is now NASTY. I'm supposed to drink 3 Protein Drinks, I could tolerate 2. I'm disgusted by the taste. I feel like a whining BABY but I'm so depressed now!

Try Protein Water it has 30g of protein or Isopure it has 40g if protein. I like the apple melon one from isopure. This way you get your liquid intake and protein at the same time. The Protein Shakes mix vanilla with unsweetened chocolate powder and freeze them it taste better that way and you get to cool off at the same time.

For those having issues with Water, try decaffeinated hot tea. I found warm liquids went down much better in the beginning than cold.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
