2 1/2 months out and having problems while eating.

Recommended Posts

While eating, I start to get a few hours in when I start to get what feels like food stuck in my throat. I feel as if I am eating small bites, chewing thoroughly, but it stl feels like it's stuck. Does anyone who is or was at this point post-op, ever have this problem sand any suggesting about what I could be doing wrong?

Surgeon told me stuck feeling in the throat is a result of overeating. But maybe it's drier food? I've had it a few times when I ate one too many bites of something. I usually don't eat more than 2 oz at a time and I'm 8 weeks post tomorrow.

If you are eating small bites, chewing thoroughly, and the food is moist when being swallowed, then this is something to bring up with your surgeon (or a GI specialist..someone that can take a look at things on the inside). The 8-12 week window is a time when the scar tissue really gets formed, and it may be pulling things tight. Strictures are common during this window of time. It doesn't really sound like a stricture, but it still could be something stiffening up. Did you have a hiatal hernia repair?

No, I didn't. I didn't think about scar tissue. I will definitely bring this issue up at my next follow up on August. Thank you!

Hmmm...like last night, I made polish sausage and sauerkraut. I was on my second bite when I started to feel it. I cut the sausage thin and then in half. I chewed it thoroughly. I must be doing something wrong. Lol..Maybe I will start my eating phases over again and try to relearn how to eat again.

No, I don't think it's because of anything you are doing. See if you can get in a smidge sooner with your doc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
