shericrazylady 113 Posted July 7, 2017 Can I eat oatmeal while on puree food? Sent from my A1601 using BariatricPal mobile app
OutsideMatchInside 10,166 Posted July 7, 2017 It was on my list of approved foods. Do you have a list from your Dr? I never tried it because I don't like it, but Oatmeal and Cream of Wheat were on the list.
Sophie74656 1,572 Posted July 7, 2017 I would double check with your Dr. It is a soft food for sure, but may not be considered a puree. I've recently been eating a lot of high Protein overnight oats that are really tasty. I can share the recipe if you like 2 ts81096 and RockDaisy reacted to this
StormJumper 14 Posted July 8, 2017 I ate oatmeal a few times while on puree, my doc got mad when they heard. She said No Carbs because they are pushed into the intestines which can't digest them properly. So I haven't eaten oatmeal since. AZLoser 103 Posted July 11, 2017 No oatmeal or grains at all. I'm surprised it's on an approved list from a bariatrics center. 1 Emailkariann reacted to this
LadyIris1 9 Posted July 11, 2017 My doc approves oatmeal during the puréed stage, it's in my approved list. They did say to eliminate it after going into the solid stage for 6 months (makes no sense to me) 1 shericrazylady reacted to this

Missy161 395 Posted July 13, 2017 I had some my first week home- I wasn't told to ever avoid it.
Sullie06 1,013 Posted July 14, 2017 My doc/NUT had it on the approved list for puree. My NUT said to make it soupy. I ate a lot of Cream of Wheat because I prefer it to Oatmeal and still eat it on occasion when I need a change or am doing a high carb day. I eat on a variable cycle so my body doesn't get used to eating the same way. 1 Sosewsue61 reacted to this
SunsUp 12 Posted July 16, 2017 I was told no oatmeal ever. My dietician asked if I've seen oatmeal left in a sink and how it soaks up the liquid and bloats. He said that's what happens in your stomach. And there's better choices. Unfortunately I hate cream of wheat.Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app

Oats are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates as well as Fiber. I am not sure what they would consider a "better" choice. Bran is good; as is shredded wheat, but I wouldn't say they are better. As for the "soaking" up the liquid, the only liquid in our stomachs should be digestive juices. Which is mainly hydrochloric acid. I'm pretty sure that oats (nor oatmeal) are impervious to hydrochloric acid. The example given of sitting in the sink isn't really a fair comparison because of the mastication of food in our stomach versus the unchewed food in the sink. Not picking on you Suns, just questioning the advice of your dietitian. 1 Sosewsue61 reacted to this
NikkiWorldJourney 70 Posted July 16, 2017 Cream of wheat is on my puréed list but oatmeal is the next soft food phase on my list.
