No Special Pre-Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

So I spoke to my surgeon last week and he told me to just continue on my low carb, high Protein diet leading up to my sleeve surgery this Tuesday, July 11th. The Hospital told me to not eat anything after midnight the day of surgery but that's it. I'm kind of shocked because everyone seems to be on a special pre-op diet prior to surgery. I have lost nearly 80 pounds in 6 months since I started the process so my thought was perhaps this is the reason why he's not altering my diet prior to surgery. Also my surgeon did confirm I'll have a catheter for the surgery. As a male, I'm so not looking forward to that!

Anyways anyone out there not been asked to be on special pre-op diet? If so, any recommendations what I should eat the day before surgery? Should I just try to keep it to liquids only?

I'd double-check with your surgeon again, then follow what he says. They are all so different in their requirements. As for the cath, they inserted and removed mine while I was under so the only after effect was a little burning when I first urinated.

Yeah I actually checked with the surgeons office again yesterday and they just said no special instructions from him except to continue my normal diet. I feel like I need to keep things light just in case. I really don't want any complications. I guess maybe I'm just being over paranoid.

If you really haven't been eating carbs, your liver is small and there is no reason for a liver shrinking diet. The fact you have lost so much weight pre-op has convinced them you are actually following the diet.

You have a Dr that isn't an idiot, Congrats. They are rare.

I just did Clear Liquids from noon day before, no other special diet.

You are trusting your doctor to cut you open, if you can't trust his diet recommendations perhaps you should rethink the cutting part, LOL

I ate low carb before as well. Why do I have to do this starvation diet? I thought it was to help the liver. I HATE starving between shakes and my one little meal.

I'm having RNY this Tuesday 7/11 and my surgeon has me doing liquids only this Sunday and Monday before the surgery. I've been doing high Protein and low carb for the last 6 months that I've been under his care. My understanding was that the diet before hand was to help lose weight and shrink the liver. Your awesome pre surgery weight loss is most likely why you don't have to do that 2 week liquid diet that some have to go through.

I just had a Lapband revision to Gastric Bypass on July 5th. I was not required to do the diet beforehand. At first I thought it was strange but figure it was because I did not regain my Lapband weight loss and have been doing low carb for about 18 months. He said day before surgery, have a very light Breakfast, lunch, and only clear liquids after noon. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
